Course Description
Learn to design and plan research on current global issues, for subject MIST926 at the University of Wollongong.
The subject provides theoretical and practical foundation for a research proposal. The subject will familiarise student with research methods appropriate for investigating current issues in a global environment.
This subject is part of a Graduate Certificate of Global Citizenship.
The subject involves scaffolded assessment items, which gradually build students' research planning and design skills. These assessment items conclude with a written research proposal and a presentation. Subject delivery will be fully online to non-UOW students. face-to-face delivery is available for UOW enrolled students.

Post graduate students, and interested public audience.
Design approach
Repurpose another open course of several resources:
- A Research Methodology subject by the Faculty of Arts, North-West University, South Africa
- Existing OER materials
In addition, proprietary content based on a Research Methods subject offered by the Faculty of Education at the university of Wollongong is being used, with permission.
Learning outcomes
Completing this subject, students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate research methods including their ethical approach.
2. Understand and synthesize different approach to research methods; issues include:
- formulating research questions;
- situating research questions in the relevant literature;
- developing methodology; and
- collecting, interpreting and employing data
3. Create a research proposal that leads to the completion of an executable research plan.

Online quizzes on the content covered during the week's module, demonstrating understanding of concepts. Post online progress in terms of research question, situating in literature, developed methodology, data collection, and data interpretation. Comment on peers' posts. Suggestions for comments:

Overview of the delivery model
The subject will be delivered as a stand-alone short (4 week) online course, in a fully online version.
The subject will be offered in parallel with a local, campus-based cohort, which will work at a slower, university-term pace (13 weeks).
