Hello to all. Sorry I'm late. I teach Police Studies at Seneca College in King City Ontario. I came to Seneca five years ago after retiring from the Peel Regional Police , having served as a cop for almost thirty-eight years. I am sure you guys can do the math and conclude that I really am "an old dog learning new tricks". I see several of my compadres have already posted and although I am waaay behind I plan to catch up. Looking forward to meeting you all and learning lots.

Dear Friends, Please use this page to introduce yourself to your fellow participants. Tell us a bit of yourself and why you joined the training and are hoping to do with it.--Patricia Schlicht 04:42, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Randy Fisher (aka WikiRandy)

My name is Randy Fisher - and it was way back in 2007 when I had a life-changing event, meeting Wayne Mackintosh and experiencing WikiEducator. I promptly changed my name to WikiRandy! I've been hooked on the possibilities of bringing open education resources into the mainstream, and engaging faculty and admin to use both the wiki as a production space, as well as OERs to achieve their goals and objectives. I have been intimately involved in facilitating the growth of WikiEducator. I have recently served as project manager for the Community College Consortium for Open Education Resources. A hall mark of WikiEducator is that we are a valuable community of support - if you have a question, concern or suggestion - please ask first, and don't hesitate to contact me. I'm here to help!

Marc Kivel

Howdy! I'm Marc Kivel joining in from Frisco, Texas (just a bit north of Dallas). I'm very excited by the idea of open education resources (OER) and how they will change the face of formal education world-wide. My background is primarily in paper-based instructional design and f2f instruction with adult audiences dealing with technical subjects. I am dousing myself with a heavy amount of OER online to be more marketable in this dynamic economy and because I believe it's the best way to help folks achieve their goals on their timetables. I'm looking forward to collaborating with my peers and facilitators and contirbuting to the growth of WikiEducator. Thanks for making this training possible!

Marc - the beauty of WikiEducator is that it is a space / place to develop open educational resources for either face to face or online learning. It really helps you easily record / capture your ideas, to use in future iterations of materials development. There's even a nifty feature that allows you to make "collections" of pages that you make (in a sense, a downloadable book - for printing - See: WikiPublishing) that can serve as a companion to your paper-based classes. - Randy Fisher

Welcome Marc. I joined Wiki community a couple of years ago. Due to various pressures, I was not able to complete the course and become a WikiBuddy myself. This time I am all out to become a Facilitator Online leveraging this wonderful resource and great network of people like you. Once again, Welcome aboard - Sebastian Panakal

I am participating in this training to refine my skills in building both a personal wiki and a wiki in which to run a special interest group on equity and access issues in higher education. Nice to meet you all.

As I type these lines, I am concerned for my colleagues on the seaboard of far north Queensland in Australia as a large tropical storm (cyclone) approaches. Be safe one and all.

Julie - Welcome aboard! [DEHub] is an excellent example of how the wiki can be used. I invite all of our colleagues to check it out. It is also an excellent example of institutional collaboration. You are an excellent resource to our WE community. I look forward to you articulating, how we can be of service to you - the wiki way! - Randy Fisher 17:11, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Thank you Julie - for showing us the great work you and your team at [DEHub] is doing for global growth using OER blessings. I am a Trainer and Resource Person for School/College Teaching Staff and should be able to introduce your project in colleges where I have already trained learners, lecturers and professors on OER skills.--Sebastian Panakal 07:37, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Tom Abeles

I edit the international academic journal On the Horizon and have an international consulting practice that works with governments, academic institutions, the private sector and policy analysts on theory, praxis and the present/future of education, in click as well as brick space, from class level to policy, operations to finance, and from primary schools to academic research.

A portion of our work involves projects in the area of sustainability and renewable energy, from student laboratories to 2000 hectares of sustainable agriculture and biofuel production/use.

We integrate the two areas through involvement, as appropriate, with projects. These can be simple projects involving service learning and competency based education to participation in commercial level projects and work with citizens groups or government agencies.

On the Horizon, is a foresight academic journal which has, in the past and forthcoming, special issues on such subjects as education and the new media, education and "the new normal", games/simulations in education and theoretical issues such as complexity science and education. OER questions both the content delivery and economic models of traditional education systems, internationally, and it challenges its own movement's ability to build a viable economic model and one which has credibility- the focus of this current effort.

Tom - If you're looking for complexity theory in action, you've come to the right place. At one level, this course is about learning wiki skills - at another level, it's about learning about the dynamics of a complex, self-organizing ecosystem. As is the case, with open source technology, there is a definite economic model regarding the use, production and remix / repurposing of OERs. OER adoption and use is springing up all over the place - usually a grassoots effort - but a notable example of an institution-wide adoption is the Washington State Community and Technical Colleges (Cable Green's outfit). Glad to have you onboard! - Randy Fisher 17:18, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Tom - You look like the person I could connect with our Alumni Association at Sacred Heart College. I am forming an Alumni Cloud at Sacred Heart College, to launch 'Seniors Mentor Juniors'. Seniors spend some quality time with the juniors at Skype sessions; day scholars tap the experience and expertise of elders. We started connecting using Facebook, and are awed by the human resource, our college mates spread across the globe. I now plan to teach OER and Wiki editing skills to my juniors to grow our network of love! I should like to get your guidance in such projects. Sebastian Panakal

I am a Coach at eSchool Kerala, a school helping people go online, use Wiki and Web 2.0 technologies to be successful in the Knowledge Era. At eSchool Kerala I have a consulting practice that works with governments, academic institutions, the private sector and policy analysts on theory, practise and the present/future of education. As an Online Trainer, I train 12 year olds to retired hands. I use Skype platform for Educators to improve language learning of my learners.

A portion of my work involves Teaching Thinking and Fusion Mathematics (a project that uses Vedic Mathematics & Spreadsheets) to help children understand mathematical logic and to make maths fun. I work with school and colleges to help them connect with other schools and collegs abroad, using Skype and Social Software. I am here to network and connect with my Wiki classmates and their friends.

We also have an platform for school / college students called eBalajanasakhyam, where we teach Thinking Skills to empower Gen Next. Thanks to this exciting time in history, I can use videoconferencing tools to connect with like minded people all over the world. Wiki skills is a godsend for successful networking.

One of our team members Darsana Joseph is working on a Wiki project to show and tell the practical use of Wiki. She is working on a Waste to Wealth Project. It still has to take off for want of funding. But we are working on it to raise funds for the take off.

We integrate education and entrepreneurship at Darsana Joseph's school, the only place from where she can launch such a project. We have a Conversation Club, in tune with Sugata Mitra's "Hole in the Wall" experiment.

Shortly, Sacred Heart College Alumni Association will launch cloud computing to help the needy on very many social problems, a free form design by The Thinking Club of eBalajanasakhyam members integrating Dr. Abdul Kalam's, "India Vision 2020", Web 2.0 and Wiki spaces.

Sebastian - welcome aboard - you have valuable experiences to share with our newer wiki colleagues. Also, there may be opportunities for collaboration - between people and institutions seeking joint-venture projects. Looking forward to seeing how this evolves! - Randy Fisher 17:08, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
