Definition
Settling of suspended, nonsoluble material out of water

Purpose

To remove suspended solids. This has two effects:

  1. To reduce organic matter and possible toxic material attached to the solids
  2. Improve efficient and reduce amount of chemicals needed in downstream treatment processes.

Operation

The process uses a large tank. The tank is large enough that the water flow is very slow. This causes suspended solids to settle on the bottom. These settled solids are then occassional removed.
