Open teaching has the ability to transform the instructor into a facilitator of learning for participants who have access to course content. Currently the best example of open teaching comes from MOOC’s (Massive Open Online Course). However, no single definition of open teaching has emerged. Some instructors approach it by taking their credit courses and inviting in those who want to take it for no credit by utilizing blogging and social networking (Ex. David Wiley: Open Teaching Multiplies the Benefit but Not the Effort). Other courses are designed to be open and free to everyone (Ex. What is a MOOC?). An overarching theme is to open up the participation and content, whether it is as simple as a traditional credit student blogging and receiving comments from around the world or thousands of individuals participating openly in a free course for professional or personal gain.
