Lesson Title:
Dirty Drink? Distill!
|
Date: 28/8/2015
|
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to;
- identify materials and equipment necessary to distill water
- Identify locally-available materials to be used instead of expensive/unavailable laboratory equipment
- Purify water via distillation
|
Introduction
This lesson will show students how to get clean water using information available on Wikipedia and local materials.
|
Teacher activities:
- Review previous lesson on decanting water
- Place students into groups for the project
- guide groups to online/offiline resources and ask them to make a list of the required materials
- ask each group explain what each item is used for, and to identify some local material they could possibly use instead
|
Learner activities:
- Come into groups and research the required materials for distilling water
- Further Research one piece of equipment used in distillation and find a locally-available substitute
Groups work together to assemble something that should distill water
- Collect 3 samples:
- Juice
- Muddy Water
- Saltwater
- Distill them using the device the class made
|
Conclusion:
- Have the students evaluate the water they distilled. Is it clear? Would they drink it?
- Have students evaluate the device they made. What worked well? Did anything break or fail? Why?
|
Learner evaluation:
- Have students propose a revised version of the device that would work better than the one they made today. Have them explain the improvements. Can be done in a group or individually, as homework.
