About focal points

The DS4OER sprint comprises a number of focal points which participants can choose to focus on during sessions according to their own interests and experience in open design.

Definition

Wikipedia describes a focal point as follows:

  • In fine art a focal point focuses on a point of interest which makes a work unique
  • In optics, the focus is the point at at which collimated rays of light meet after passing through a convex lens, or reflecting from a concave mirror

Authoring in the wiki

Basic wiki skills

This focal point aims to provide participants the opportunity to practice a range of basic wiki skills for authoring content

Level: Newbie
Primary resource: Wiki skills challenge

Suggested outputs

  1. Sandbox page demonstrating:
    • Basic text formatting (Bold, italics, bullet lists, numbered lists, indents)
    • Links (note difference between internal links and external links)
    • Images (embed image from Wikimedia commons and upload personal image
  2. Update WikiEducator userpage



Blueprinting the wiki way

Designing a course blueprint

This focal point aims to support participants in establishing a course planning page in the wiki and designing a blueprint and/or course description.

Level: All Primary resource: Designing a blueprint

Suggested outputs

  1. Create a planning homepage in the wiki. (See example planning homepage for DS4OER).
  2. Commence work on a design blueprint or course description for your planned resource
  3. Create a "My wiki projects" sub-heading on your user page and list a link to your blueprint or course description as an item under this subheading.
  4. Provide feedback on participant blueprints and course descriptions.



Storyboarding

Storyboarding your learning pathway

The aim of this focal point is to use the storyboarding technique to design a learning sequence

Level: All
Primary resource: Developing a storyboard

Suggested outputs

  1. Generate a storyboard for one or more learning pathways.
  2. Create a "My wiki projects" sub-heading on your user page list a a link to your storyboard as an item under this subheading.
  3. Provide feedback on fellow participants' storyboards.



Pathway outline

Outlining a learning pathway

The aim of this focal point is to outline a collection of wiki pages for your learning pathway which will be used to publish a course site.

Level: All
Primary resource: Outlining a course

Suggested outputs

  1. Publish an outline for one or two learning pathways linked to the course outline sub-page of your planning homepage.
  2. Start populating individual pages with content.
  3. Comment on fellow participants' course outlines in the wiki.

Inserting pedagogical templates

The aim of this focal point is to practice using pedagogical templates in the wiki

Primary resource: Pedagogical templates Quickstart guide

Suggested outputs

  1. Practice inserting a few pedagogical templates on your sandbox page. (see also tasks for pedagogical template challenge.)
  2. Insert pedagogical templates in your course outline pages as needed and appropriate.



Installing WordPress

Publishing your course site on WordPress

The aim of this focal point is to install your own WordPress site for publishing your course materials.

Level: All
Primary resource: Publishing a course site

Suggested outputs

  1. Install WordPress on OpenShift
  2. Embed the widget for launching the publishing script on our outline page.
  3. Publish your course site.
