Solutions often come from unexpected places as momentum builds in a project.
Consider the Estonian campaign "Let's Do It!" This was a grass-roots initiative to clean up the country from illegal waste in just one day. On 3rd May 2008, 50,000 volunteers cleaned up more than 10,000 tons of garbage.
As a result:
- 22.5 million euros worth of work was done with the cost of 0.5 million euros.
- Waste dumping has since decreased by 75%.
- 10,000 tons of garbage was put into proper waste handling processes.
- 40% of the garbage was recycled - a record in Estonia.
