What is this course about?
This course offers learners an introductory experience into the world of Outdoor Education. Students will develop new skills and experiences in a range of Outdoor Pursuits such as kayaking, tramping, camping, orienteering, high ropes and adventure based learning activities . Through these experiences learners will develop valuable lifelong skills such as communication skills, team work, confidence building, trust, and personal and social responsibility.
This is a practical based subject with a theory component. This is not a university approved subject. Both Unit and Achievement standard are offered in this course.
It should be noted that this course will involve a number of days out in the practical environment. Students must be aware that some of the camps and assessments may take place after school and in weekends. Assessment will cover a selection of level two and three unit and achievement standards and will total at least 20 credits. Details of which assessments will be covered will be confirmed later this year.
== What sorts of things will I do? ==
Interpersonal Skills Students will learn the importance of interpersonal skills and how these skills work in the functioning of a group or a team. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate these in group situations through completing a high ropes course and participating in ABL activities
Risk Management & Leadership: Students will be introduced to the concepts of risk management and leadership and will have the opportunity to apply these skills in a chosen outdoor pursuit or activity
Navigation, Tramping & Camping Students will learn how to read maps and navigate themselves in preparation for completing the Hillary Trail in the Waitakere Ranges. In preparation for this they will also learn the fundamentals around camping and tramping in the bush
Kayaking: Students will partake in kayaking sessions and learn about social responsibility and the role this has in their personal lives and the impact this has on self and others around them

Do I have to do all the standards in the course?
- YES. You will be entered for all standards in the course and are expected to give your best effort in all of them. The only exceptions will where an individual learning plan is approved by the specialist subject leader after consultation with your parents, tutor and student services.
- This will only be approved where students have attempted the external topics and find them too difficult, in which case alternative internal standards may be included in their curriculum where able.
- Students and parents must ensure that the individualised learning plan will still meet the entry requirements for tertiary study.

How much does the course cost?
The previous cost of the level two outdoor education course is $475 for the full year, however, the course outline has changed for 2017 and the cost will be lower than this. This is all inclusive and will cover the expenses associated with trips and camps such as transport, accommodation, instructors fees and equipment etc. Please note that this fee is less than half the actual cost of the course as it has been heavily subsidised by the school and the STAR funding. Application to the Course Due to the special nature of this course, applications must be approved by the head of department and numbers may be limited.
