My name is Sahiti and I am a student in the CIS2 at DeAnza college. My topic for my Grand Challenge Project is saving coral reefs. Coral reefs are like rainforests of the sea, they play an important role in marine life. However because of mostly because of human activity, coral reefs are starting to deteriorate at alarming rates. Coral 'bleaching' occurs when the temperature of the ocean spikes- something that global warming has largely contributed to. Because coral reefs are mostly being damaged due to global warming, some things that we can do to prevent this is relying less of fossil fuels. Using less paper in classrooms and using paperless worksheets through technology can also help. Solving this problem is imortant because one quarter of marine life depend on corals for shelter and continued damage to coral reefs could lead to the whole marine ecosystem being destroyed.

Introductions

https://tophat.com/blog/6-pros-cons-technology-classroom/

I decided to do some research for this one and found this article talks which about the pros and cons of computers specifically in classrooms. I decided to chose this because I thought it might interesting to people that might take this class in the future to learn about the pros and cons of technology in the classroom since this is an online class. This can help people take take advantages of the pros and try to minimize the cons.

https://www.livescience.com/20718-computer-history.html

This is also a new article that I found which is great for just understanding the history of computers and how they have changed. It might be interesting to see if people ever considered the social issues that technology would bring back then.

I would say the first article might be a little bit better for this topic because it seems more relevant today with students and teachers using technology becoming more prevalent.

Privacy and Freedom of Speech

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/607938/google-now-tracks-your-credit-card-purchases-and-connects-them-to-its-online-profile-of-you/

I chose this , from my own group discussion, article because does a really good job of explaining that google and many other websites collect plenty of information about their users and use this information to personalize the user's experience. This article really made me think about what might be a good topic of debate in the future to weigh the pros and cons of whether companies should take this information.

https://freedom-to-tinker.com/2018/04/12/when-the-business-model-is-the-privacy-violation/

I decided to dig a little deeper and found this new article. One one hand collecting, it can help personalize the users experience, but on the other hand some might consider it a violation of privacy. I decided to look into this further and found the above articles discussing when this can go too far and even become illegal.

I personally felt that the second article was more interesting and useful because unlike the first one, it talked about the possible dangers of collecting data and educated people about when this might be illegal while the first one only seems to discuss the pros.

Intellectual Property

https://definitions.uslegal.com/i/intellectual-property

Before I started working on this module I remember I did not really understand what intellectual property was. I chose this website because it provides a really good overview of what intellectual property is and after understand the meaning of intellectual property, it is easier to learn about how it relates to technology.

http://www.pewinternet.org/2004/12/05/artists-musicians-and-the-internet/

This was an interesting article that someone else had brought up in the discussion. It was very interesting and discussed and showed how technology is being used to help artists and musicians careers. This article really got me thinking about all of the other career opportunities that the internet has led to like with sites like linkedin or even craigslist and helped me realize that the internet is pretty much a way of sharing information and connecting people.

I would chose the second one for this topic because the first article pretty much just defines a keyword and gives you a good basis for understanding the topics further discussed while the second one really provides an explanation about how technology is being used for creators.

Crime

https://fossbytes.com/hacking-techniques/

Everybody that owns any type of technology should definitely read this because it discusses the different methods that hackers to hack into someone’s device or account. Reading this article will give you a good idea on how to prevent these types of things from happening. For example learning about phishing can help people understand that why they should always double check to make sure the site they are on is not fake, especially if it is a bank. (new)

https://www.lifewire.com/ive-been-hacked-now-what-2487230

This is an article that I did my discussion on . This would be a great resource when someone is panicking about what to do when they realized they have been hacked than the one that I put. This also included very useful tips on what to do in order to prevent being hacked in the future. I bookmarked this article and it definitely gave me a sense of relief so that I know what to do if I ever get hacked.

I think both of these are really good resources, however for the sake of learning, I would personally chose the the first one. The second one is helpful for people that have been hacked and need immediate help but the first one provides a little more context and information about hacking. (new)

Employment Education and Entertainment

https://www.fastcompany.com/3036796/3-first-steps-for-collaborating-on-creative-projects

This article was posted by a class mate and provided some helpful practical advice when it came to working with other people. I would reccomend this article because a lot of the advice given on here, such as being open to others opinions, setting your ego aside, listening, and communicating effectively is great advice not just for group project but for everything. (classmate)

https://www.goodnet.org/articles/7-best-apps-for-people-disabilities-list This articles provides some other great apps for people with disabilities. I decided to choose this article because this represents a huge benefit of technology and is a great example of how technology is making people’s lives better. This article made me really happy to read because it shows that by using technology, people are creating things to help those less fortunate.

https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-03-18/op-ed-engineering-is-fundamental-for-our-kids

I looked through the discussion and found a really good article that one of my classmates posted. I chose this article because it explains how it is important to be teaching kids more about technology and why it is is important. When weighing in the pros and cons and considering the big picture of how technology affects our society,. I think that this article really showed a huge pro with technology. ( classmate)

I liked the third article because it brought attention to our education system and how we should incorporate more STEM based programs for children to peak their interest. This article also explained one of my big questions throughout this course “What are the pros and cons of technology?”

Coral Reefs/ Grand Challenge

https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/article/creative-ways-help-coral-reefs-recover

I chose this article because and used it in my own discussion because it does a great job explaining what it is exactly that causes coral bleaching and ways to prevent it using technology. I would especially recommend this for people that don't know much or are confused about coral bleaching because it uses images and clearly explains in simple term what coral bleaching is and how it can happen. (own)

http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/managing-the-reef/threats-to-the-reef/climate-change/what-does-this-mean-for-species/corals

The first article hinted at high temperatures being a cause for coral bleaching so I decided to do some research and look into it more. This article describes the role that climate change plays in coral bleaching. Most of us know that climate change is happening and will have detrimental effects but I did not know the huge role it played with coral bleaching. This helped me connect the dots and made me feel even more passionate about reducing global warming.

For this topic, I would recommend the first article because it ties in more with technology and discusses interesting concepts like micro fragmentation , to help damaged coral populations to recover.

Evaluating and controlling technology

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/13/internet-not-conquered-digital-divide-rich-poor-world-bank-report

I highly recommend this article because it helped me understand an important part of one of the biggest social problems that we have today which is the poverty in developing countries. This article discusses this gap in terms of technology and how it has affected the digital divide between the developed and developing countries. (own)

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/digital-divide-widens-between-rich-and-poor-countries-unctad/articleshow/2764021.cms

I decided to do further research outside of my discussion and found that this article which further explains this gap. Both of these article made me feel kind of upset and surreal because not everyone is as lucky as we are in having technology which can help people get access to other resources.

Again, both of these articles were good but I think the first one is better for this topic because it goes more into detail about the social issues associated with this gap and how not having technology can be detrimental while the second one did not really explain how people are affected by this.

Risks failures and responsibilities

https://www.techwalla.com/articles/10-ways-computers-are-used-in-medicine

I chose this article because is started some classmates had some interesting points in this discussion about the possible benefits and risks of using technology in medicine. I recommend this article because it goes provides some insight on the current role that technology plays in medicine and also gets you thinking about the future role that it might play. (for example robotic surgeons ect)

https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/medical-profession-is-underutilizing-computer-technology/

This is another article that a classmate posted that I did not review at the time of the discussion but after reading it, I highly recommend it. I chose this article because it was very unique from the other ones in this discussion and explained why technology should be used much more in medicine and how it can help improve efficiency. This article was really thought provoking and made me consider looking into biotechnology more. ( Classmate)

I would recommend the second article more for this topic because while both are helpful since they explain the benefits of technology, the second one goes further and explains that it should be used more. The second article presents a shortcoming with the medical field and explains why technology should be used more in the medical field.

Anytime, Anywhere

After reviewing the discussion about politics and the web and understanding how some websites are organized and professional and others are not, I decided to look into a few articles on how to improve the quality of a website

When going through this discussion in which we compared different political websites I noticed a few common themes that made everyone (including me) used to label a website professional and give it a higher rating. I chose this article for this topic because it kind of summarized the main idea of our discussion that professional websites are organized, have appropriate colors, and are free of clutter.

https://www.intechnic.com/blog/what-makes-a-website-user-friendly/

I chose this article which talks about the features that make a website more user friendly. I recommend this article because I think it does a good job explaining how and why a website can be user friendly. Being user friendly is very integral to having a good quality website because if the person using the website can navigate with it. (new)

I choose the first one as the better article for this topic because it is more broad and includes all of the features needed to make a website better. The second article went into detail about a specific feature that makes websites better so as a whole for this topic I would chose the first one.

Technology, Advances, Social Trends

https://medium.com/traction-report/google-glass-2-0-and-the-future-of-augmented-reality-ee85cd97b

I remember in this discussion seeing a few people mentioning google glass so I decided to look further into this. I found this article very fascinating because it explains what the google glass is and how it relates to virtual reality.

https://blog.euromonitor.com/2014/05/google-glass-in-eyewear-impact-on-consumers-and-society.html

This article is similar to the previous one but it goes further and discusses the impact that google glass has on society. I recommend it because it weighs in the risks and benefits with the google glass.

I would recommend the second article more for this topic because some of the advantages and disadvantages of the google glass discussed in this article are similar those of other new technologies.
