Compare Iago and Othello.


Personality.

Task: Construct a Venn diagram looking at character traits of these two people. Compile similarities and differences, and give a piece of evidence for each personality trait you identify. (Obviously if you identify a similarity, you will need one piece of evidence for each character to prove your point.)

Why is Iago the Villain?

Iago is traditionally seen as the villain in this play. He undertakes a number of actions in the play that we view as morally terrible. Upon closer inspection, each of these crimes is actually committed by Othello as well.

Task: Find examples of when both Othello and Iago undertake each of the following actions:


Iago
Othello
Claims he is driven by jealousy “Tis thought abroad that betwixt my sheets he’s done my office” “Cassio did top her: ask thy husband else”
Does something bad in exchange for money
Betrays another’s trust in him.
Doesn’t mind destroying others to advance his own cause
Kills his wife
Doesn’t want to be a cuckold.

Why is Iago the Villain?


Iago
Othello
Driven by jealousy Jealous of Cassio’s position of lieutenant, Othello marrying Desdemona Jealous of the relationship between Desdemona and Cassio
Driven by money Gets Roderigo’s money by pretending to woo Desdemona on his behalf. He is a mercenary for the state. He uses his “talents” to advance his position.
Betrays a trust place in him by another Emilia, Cassio, Roderigo, Othello and Desdemona all trust Iago blindly. Desdemona trust her husband to believe her if her honour was every challenged.
Doesn’t mind destroying others to advance his own cause Iago destroys Roderigo, Cassio, Desdemona, Othello and Emilia to advance himself. Othello is a mercenary employed by Venice. He kills people for money, regardless of morals.
Kills his wife V.ii. V.ii.
Doesn’t want to be a cuckold. Thinks Othello has done his service between his sheet. Believes Cassio is cuckolding him.
Deceitful Deceives just about everyone. Deceives his wife and lieutenant.
