This article focuses on the negative aspects of technology. Specifically, technology leading to depression as a result of isolation. It is important to consider the risks we take when we become dependent on something. Computers are everywhere, so it is important to have a healthy relationship with them.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/computer-technology-will-transform-schools-future/ Computers and Society websites - Arcelia Arzate

Throughout my education, technology has become more a part of my learning curriculum each year. I think as it stands right now teachers are not too dependent on technology. However, I do remember several times being inconvenienced during a lecture because technology wasn't working. It will be interesting to see the ways that technology becomes integrated even more into education. Whether technology and education going hand in hand is a good thing is up to how we utilize it.

2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

BEST: http://lawdigitalcommons.bc.edu/bclr/vol47/iss3/2/ Privacy and Freedom of Speech keywords - CAMERON NYZNYK

This article discusses the NSA's illegal use of people's private information. On one hand, it can protect people from crime. On the other hand, our information should be private. The government is legally allowed to share any surveillance that they think is threatening to our country, and they have the power to interpret this in any way they wish.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/03/business/chinas-battle-against-google-heats-up.html?_r=0 Privacy and Freedom of Speech keywords- MINSEOK CHOI

For as long as there has been public information, there has been censoring. Time and time again it is proven that censoring is harmful and unfair to the masses. All people deserve to see and know the truth. This article talks about how the Chinese government censors Google and Facebook for it's citizens.

http://www.scu.edu/ethics/practicing/focusareas/technology/internet/privacy/why-care-about-privacy.html Privacy and Freedom of Speech keywords - Monique Gonzales

Medical and arrest records are now public for all people to see. I think this article makes an excellent point in regards to the privacy of medical and arrest records. The violation of this privacy prevents people from having a second chance at life. How can we expect people to try and become better citizens with this huge obstacle in their way?

3. Intellectual Property

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20140406/07212626819/sony-youtube-take-down-sintel-blenders-open-source-creative-commons-crowdfunded-masterpiece.shtml Intellectual Property Keywords - MELLISSA HUYNH

This article highlights the downside of the Youtube copyright system. Although the short animated film in question was made legally under Creative Commons license, it was still taken down because the copyright system recognized it as Sony's property. This shows how discouraging it can be for small scale artists to make something because of a lack of power.

http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/fair-use-rule-copyright-material-30100.html Intellectual Property Keywords- Mikayla Druhan

This article explains the difference between copyright infringement and simply using a piece of something to comment on. The fair use copyright law allows someone to use part of someone else's work without asking. After reading this article, it seems like there are some gray areas when it comes to this law. I often hear about musicians being sued for using similar melodies. As an author or artist, I  imagine sometimes it can be quite frustrating to create new and original work when there is already so much out there. There is also a huge difference between simply giving an author credit and using the fair use law. An author cannot just use someone else's work and give them credit, it doesn't fall under the same category as the fair use law.

As consumers we don't always consider where our dollar goes and if we are actually supporting the artists we love. I have always assumed the bands and artists I love are well off enough and secure financially, but after reading this article I realized I was wrong.

4. Crime

When political facebook arguments get too heated, usually people somehow end the fight by walking away from the discussion. In this particular instance, it ended in a stabbing. With increased global communication, social media can pose many different issues. While it is good to hear new perspectives, if someone is not open and willing to hear another person's point of view it can end badly.

BEST: http://thewaterproject.org/about_us 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger- ITUNG ANGGA

The goal of the nonprofit, the water project, is to provide clean drinking water to third world countries all over the world. Technology will definitely make this an easier process as well as give these people a bigger voice. This website is very informative and makes it simple to get involved.

http://ladieslearningcode.com/ 3. Promote gender equality and empower women SHIQI ZHU

Half of the world's population is not equal to the other half; women are still not seen as equal to men in many parts of the world, even the most "civilized" countries. In the work force, there are many jobs that are dominated by men, yet women are completely capable of doing them as well. This is because women are not supported to become engineers and et cetera. With programs like ladies learning to code, we can give women the confidence they need to achieve their career dreams.

http://www.cbsm.com/public/world.lasso 7. Ensure environmental sustainability  MIKAYLA DRUHAN

Community Based Social Marketing is a method that uses social sciences, primarily psychology, in order to get people more involved in a specific habit or community project. This is similar to education and advertising, but it is much more hands on. According to Doug McKenzie-Mohr, Ph.D., “Community-based social marketing is based upon research in the social sciences that demonstrates that behavior change is most effectively achieved through initiatives delivered at the community level which focus on removing barriers to an activity while simultaneously enhancing the activities benefits.” Many times people don’t participate in environmentally sustainable habits simply because of a lack of knowledge and convenience. Using social media and technology to seek people out, community based social marketers make their first step to remove barriers from a community to ensure better environmental practices. This type of online marketing is successful because it focuses on human centered design. If the sustainable habit becomes easy and rewarding, people are more likely to do it. The website I shared is a public forum for people trying to adopt more sustainable habits. In a way, it is like a social media site with the primary focus being environmental sustainability. The website also shares strategies for businesses to adopt better habits such as saving energy, water, and lowering waste.

7. Evaluating and Controlling Technology

There is no denying that technology has integrated into an everyday part of most peoples' lives. In some ways, technology is important and useful. However, it can cross the line from habit to addiction. The question is, do we need technology or does technology need us? Who is really in control?

Some people are afraid of the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) taking over humans. Even smart and forward thinking entrepreneurs Bill Gates and Elon Musk have expressed concern for this threat in the future. In this video, the speaker talks about how we are getting a little ahead of ourselves. Artifical Intelligence cannot take over until we create robots that are conscious, which has not happened yet.

8. Risks, Failures and Responsibilities

BEST: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/21/sunday-review/high-tech-health-care-useful-to-a-point.html Computers and Medicine - Melissa Huynh

The question this article asks is: can a computer replace your doctor? Technology to check for an ear infection, blood alcohol levels, and cholesterol levels all from the convenience of your iphone is now a reality. However, can a robot really ever replace human instinct and empathy? While these new advances have potential, most people would prefer a real human over artificial intelligence.

The over dependence of technology with medicine can create negative affects. If technology fails us or has a glitch and we are depending on it, it can interrupt workflow and slow down hospitals. http://safe.met.police.uk/internet_safety/get_the_facts.html Risks, Failures, and Responsibilities keywords - VENKATA SAI ADITYA GOLLAKOTA

Tumblr sees themselves as complementary to other social media sites rather than as competition. How can social media motivate online influencers to also be offline influencers? How can nonprofit organizations improve their websites so that people are more likely to engage in them?

There is no denying that children today are growing up in a much different world. With social media sites being as accessible as food and water, it is now more important than ever for psychologists to study what is healthy and what is crossing the line.

http://interestingengineering.com/the-future-of-the-human-body/ Future of Computers MELLISSA HUYNH

With the help of technology, the human body can be stronger, better, and last longer. It is interesting to think about the fact that the human body will evolve with technology and is not mutually exclusive from it. Should we tamper with nature any more than we already have?

Favorite Topic

What was your favorite topic? What was the ONE resource that taught you the most about computers and society?

It is hard for me to narrow down my favorite topic, because I think that in a way, all the topics go together. However, I am choosing Evaluating and Controlling technology as my favorite topic because this has stuck out in my mind throughout each topic. In every topic, I have realized there are pros and cons to everything. Everything regarding technology has a positive as well as negative consequence, and I don't believe it is one more than the other. This article, while short, definitely made me think of the negative consequences of technology addiciton: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/elisha-goldstein-phd/technology-vs-humans-whos_b_812305.html .

This class has definitely changed my perspective on computers, internet, and even life. I need to be more mindful in the way I interact with technology. I don't want to become too dependent on a piece of metal for every aspect of my life. I've decided to take at least one day a week away from all technology. Yes, ALL technology; including my phone. Our culture has evolved into becoming available 24/7, and I think this is negatively affecting us on personal and social levels. If we don't step away from our technology, we will forget what the beauty and magic of solitude feels like. Also, we will take our technology for granted because it is always right next to us.

I want to use the power of unlimited information and technology for good. With all of these new resources, I can find ways to become active in my community. I can find a way to keep technology a part of my life while not becoming too dependent on it. I can use my voice on social media for important issues in today's world. Most importantly, I can put my phone away, and look up at the beauty that surrounds me in real life.
