Midterm Project:

  • I worked on a topic, provide access to clean water. It was interesting to research this topis because this issue is related to climate change, places, and even political problems. Some associations and companies work hard to solve this issue by creating new technologies such as desalination system and innovative filters. These technologies are used in many countries, especially developing countries in Africa, where it is hard to access clean water.

Final Project - Best Articles

Introduction

This article is really great. It desctibes how the methods of note-taking such as typing on computer and hand writing affect students’ learning by representing the experiment which were conducted by researchers, Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer. It is true that this article shows impacts digital technology on student's learning interestingly. In addition, the article, "Why you should stop taking notes on your computer": http://blog.crew.co/why-you-should-stop-taking-notes-on-your-computer/, states thay we should not take notes on computers and suggest grab a pen inteadd of computer. Personally, I like this article because as a student, this topic is really interesting. I actually prefer taking notes on my computer, but this article gave me a chance to rethink about it.

I think that this article nicely describes how Internet and wireless technology influence people and our society. Today, people live in both virtual and real worlds, and some people likely to face only virtual world due to well-advanced communication services, such as Facebook and Twitter. Moreover, this article states that wireless communication has potential to change political structures better, so Internet can help people to get their freedoms and rights in this way. This article gave me an answer that how this society and people basically influenced by technology and Internet.

Reason why I chose this article to share is that the article is really simple and easy to read and makes clear points about both positive and negative influences on computers. This article talks about how people use computers in science, educations, communication, engineering and manufacturing, banking, and business and industries fields. I think that we should know these positive and negative technology's impacts on our society to avoid facing any problems. Reading this article will help you to understand this topic to build your knowledge of computers and society for this class.

Privacy and Freedom of Speech

I think that this article is great because it introduces some possible events which could happen to you if your computer is controlled by others. In addition, the article states that it is really easy for identity thieves and fraudsters to get our personal datas and information, such as health information, private messages, and financial activities from us unless our computers are not secured or protected well. Then, the article gives the total of nine tips you should do to protect your personal datas and information. I think that these nine tips are really helpful for you. I really recommend you to read this article.

This is my favorite article in this section. The article indicates specific cases how hackers access to your personal information through Internet and give us eight tips to protect ourselves with clear explanations and reasons. Moreover, the article shows some worse possibilities which could happen to you unless you are secure. I think that after reading this article, you will rethink about conditions and settings of your computers and make some changes to protect yourself.

This article talks about our privacy over advanced technology and how Apple deals with our privacy, such as data collecting system of the company. In the article, the company’s CEO, Tim Cook states “privacy is a fundamental human right that people have.” Since I had wondered how my data is collected by Apple as one of users, I think that this article made me happy with the facts about Apple’s policy.

I really recommend you to read this article, and you will learn how your datas are collected and handled by Apple.

Intellectual Property

I think that this article is nice. It addresses that it is important to know how to ask right question in a classroom because there are different kind of questions such as essential, organizing, or divergent questions. Therefore, it is really important for students to have the ability to choose appropriate question format in different situations. Also, knowing how to search what students want on different platforms is a significant skill to get right answers. Moreover, this article says that seeing or knowing other students’ works really motivates students in a classroom. It is true that today, the technology allows students to access others’ works, so students can learn what media is best for themselves to show themselves and what they have acquired. At the same time, students can learn how to work with others internationally though Internet access, such as Twitter. In addition, the article states that learning how to evaluate oneself by collecting evidence to support one’s conclusion is more important although there are more advanced technologies in education.

This article talks about the particular impact on music industry, especially artists, in terms of diminishing of revenue they receive through streaming services such as Spotify. To examine how much money artists make, the author uses Spotify’s payout rate, $0.006 to $0.0084 per stream in this article. Also, the article says that revenue from the service is not enough to value artists’ works, especially Taylor Swift; actually Taylor has already removed her songs from Spotify’s service. I learned why some musicians have hesitation to release their songs on streaming services and how the services influence musicians and the music industry.

This article simply lists types of copyright and describes what each of them is and how they are handled under the law. The article introduces public performing right, public performance license, reproduction right, mechanical license, synchronization license, digital performance right in sound recordings. I think that it is really important for us to know these types of copyright to live in this technology age.

Crime

This article describes about a serious crime on Internet, revenge porn. Also, the article introduces how lawmakers and some companies such as Google deal with this problem. according to the article, currently 21 states in the U.S have the law for this crime, and at the same time, Google declared that they are going to remove these nonconsensual pornography(not remove actual photos; remove their appearances from its search result.). This website, http://www.cagoldberglaw.com/states-with-revenge-porn-laws/, is nice and you can see which states in the U.S. currently have this law.

This article provides the list of “Question Starts” including three parts, brainstorm 12 questions(about a topic), review brainstorm, and reflect(new idea about the topic) as tips to encourage students’ critical thinking. The article is written for position of educators, and it says that once students acquire this skill as their routine, they get better ability of critical thinking. I think that this article nicely visualizes how to work on critical thinking and makes clear points about it.

I think that this article is great because it introduces the top 12 tips which we can do for ourselves to avoid identity theft. It is true that we should have responsibility for this issue to protect ourselves. The lists are here.

1. Consider subscribing to an identity theft protection service

2. Keep personal documents in a safe

7. Cancel credit cards that you aren’t using

8. Select passwords that are difficult for others to uncover

9. Protect your computer

10. Do not reveal personal information

11. Monitor your credit

12. Shred personal documents

You can see more detailed information for each tip via the link.

Employment, Education, and Entertainment

This article gives you really fundamental knowledge of photograph, such as an idea of lighting, composition, and editing, and these information are enough to take great photos in general even  with DSLRs. That means this article states that we should handle smartphone’s camera like we do for professional cameras. You should set up correct lightning condition; relying on natural light source. Also, composing subjects is important, and understanding of what balance and exposure will more help you to take better photos. Moreover, the article introduces some editing application which run on your smartphone such as Google Camera, Camera FV-5, VSCO Cam, Snapseed, and Photoshop Express.

I really like this article for the topic because this article talks about especially three different categories of students, pre-K/ elementary school, middle school, and high school students and what kinds of technologies and devices are appropriate to each category for their learning. For example, for pre-K/ elementary students, durability and portability of devices are really important. Also, iPads are good for them because iPads allows them do many things like taking photos, reading, and researching in a single device. In addition, for middle school students, the author indicates that they are better to use Chromebooks rather than MacBooks because they are simpler and easy to use for what they do in classrooms. Also, the devices allow them to access directly online contents, cloud-based documents and work with others on their projects. Moreover, for high school student, they should use more advanced devices such as MacBooks because they allows the students to launch multiple applications at the same time and do more complicated tasks. I learned why and how it is important to know about different devices for education.

I think that this article is good. It addresses that the development of technology affects many aspects of our society and describes how the technology impacts on modern students and education. This article gives the total of five positive effects of technology on education. The five effects are about research, globalization, educational games, distance education, and web seminars. I think that this article helped me to know and understand how technology specifically impacts on our society and the changing times about the technology.

Mid Term Project - Grand Challenges

This is my favorite one because this organization and its website nicely introduces their solution to support the access of clean water. The company has developed their own filters since the project started in 1994. One of their interesting products is LifeStraw which is a pen-sized and compact filter, so it is nicely mobile to everywhere with you. You can use it just like regular straws to drink water to get clean water. Nothing hard to do, just drink untreated water using the product. I think this gives us an easy access to clean water, and this is a not infrastructure-scale of project, their products can be more available and affordable to a lot of people in developing country. In addition, the company tries to distributes their products widely by engaging governments, donors, and doctors. I think that their project is really accomplished to deal with water crisis. I think that it is great to know this company and its product because it is possible to say that the product has potentials to change the way of access to clean water all over the world.

Even though this article is not about my topic, access to clean water, I added this resource in discussion forum because I am really interested in nuclear power plants. This new technology is possible operated for long period, about 30 years, without onsite refueling. In addition, it requires less maintenance, and also it is safe due to its high quality. I think this is really interesting technology.

I believe that conservation of water is one of significants solutions for water crisis and we must take some actions to make this condition better. The article introduces the total of 25 tips you can do in your home and yard for saving water. This article strongly suggests to check any leaking of water. I think that reading this article helps you to acquire some ways and ideas of conserving water.

Evaluating and Controlling Technology

This is my favorite video from selected media. I think that the short video and its message is so strong. The video says that we should take back to reality instead of using social networks and digital devices because these technologies cause people to lose their humanity. For example, it is true that Facebook gives us many “friend lists” and interaction by sharing personal stories and photos and people are allowed to response to them with “Like” button, but at the same time, you are at the risk of being friendless in real life. Therefore, we should stop using these technology.

I like this article describing the relationship between human beings and advanced technology. I think that it is really important to know how people use technology such as computers, smartphones, and tablets for their benefits and the fact that we are already controlled by these advanced technology without knowing. In other words, people are addicted to those devices for doing many things such as learning, research, and entertainment. . I think this consequence is really dangerous because people, especially their minds, are controlled by technology even though they are supposed to control technology.

I think that this article is great and talks about digital divide. The article defines what digital divide and introduces some solutions for this issue. I learned that digital divide influences young students’ education seriously. It is not easy to solve this problem because this is a global scale of issue, so I think that the government should take actions to make it better and support low-income family for the future. We should know this issue for learning this topic.

Risks, Failures, and Responsibilities

The article is about a new technology which is able to give you a feedback which is whether or not you should have some medical care for your health based on Big Data including your medical literature, clinical data, personal electronic records, and doctor’s personal comments on you. This is a great technology because people will have pre-diagnosis before seeing doctors. However, since this technology really relies on our personal data, I am really afraid of how my data will be used. Using our data means that the computer will access our data and store it on the computer. Our privacy should be protected, but we do not know how it will be handled. I think that after reading this article, you will know much more about the future of medication with technology. I really recommend this article.

I think that this article makes interesting points. It describes about a reliability of brands manufacture digital devices based of their survey.

Also, the article states that we do not have enough information and datas to make decision for purchasing new devices, unfortunately. Therefore, reading this article will help you when you plan purchasing new devices. One of interesting facts in this article is about brands which are not ranked in the top, but they have improved their technology and services and grown their reliabilities, such as Toshiba. I think that this article is a little bit long, but it has great information for you.

It is really interesting for me to read this article which describes some risks of using technology to human health. One of interesting facts in the article is about emotional stress from smartphone. People likely to feel anxious when they are away from the devices, and it is also possible to get stressed about their notifications. I think that most people once have faced this issue as an experience. In addition, the article addresses about radiation issue from cell phones, it can cause serious health problem. We have to think about these issues introduced in this article for our health and the use of technology.

Anytime, Anywhere

This is my favorite article for the topic because this article addresses how advanced technology, such as digital devices and wireless Internet. I think that reading this article help you to acquire the knowledge of anywhere and anytime.

This short article talks about why we should move on to mobile learning and how it improve education. The author states that since students love to regularly use mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, for their personal purposes in their lives, they must welcome these technologies form their academic learning. Also, an efficient mobile learning consists of tow significant components, wireless technology such as 4G/3G and mobile devices, such as smartphones. These two technologies boost students’ learning more and more. Activities with the technologies are able to sustain high levels and qualities of student engagement and interaction with others compared to less technology focused activities. The author concludes that it is necessary to educate the next generation of scientist, innovators, engineers, and entrepreneurs by applying mobile learning.

This is a easy reading, and the article gives you some both benefits and limitations about mobile learning. I think that the more technology develops, the more opportunity of mobile learning we have, so it is really important for us to know these information. A few of benefits in the article are easy access, collaborative learning, and self-pace learning. On the other hand, a few limitations are screen size, slower connectivity, and distraction due to notifications. Since I like mobile learning and have never thought about these limitations before, i think that this article gives great information makes me rethink about mobile learning.

I think that this article is really interesting because it compares differences between face-to-face and distance communications. Because of the development of technology, it is possible for us to communicate with others, even in other countries, easier by using wireless technology from anywhere and anytime we want. Therefore, this article is great to learn how these communications are different, and it describes what each one is. Personally, I really like distance communication to talk with my family and friends living in Japan, so I know both benefits. I think that reading this article will be interesting to you.

Technology Advances, Social Trends

This article talks about how smartphones are used by people in the U.S.

There are some interesting datas which shows our reliability to smartphones and gaps between people who are in different financial conditions.

According to the research:

- 64% of adults own smartphones in the U.S. today. (Rapidly increased from 35% in the spring of 2011.)

- “10% of Americans own a smartphone but do not have any other form of high-speed internet access at home beyond their phone’s data plan.”

- “Using a broader measure of the access options available to them, 15% of Americans own a smartphone but say that they have a limited number of ways to get online other than their cell phone.”

- “Younger adults — 15% of Americans ages 18-29 are heavily dependent on a smartphone for online access.”

- “Those with low household incomes and levels of educational attainment — Some 13% of Americans with an annual household income of less than $30,000 per year are smartphone-dependent. Just 1% of Americans from households earning more than $75,000 per year rely on their smartphones to a similar degree for online access.”

- “Non-whites — 12% of African Americans and 13% of Latinos are smartphone-dependent, compared with 4% of whites.”

These datas shows that some people are likely to be dependent on smartphones to get the access to Internet due to some issues such as low income, education, and race. I think that this is an example of digital divide we have learned in a previous module. The gap is getting wider and wider over time as technology advances.

I think because the data shows 64% of adults own smartphone today and its number has been dramatical increased since 2011, people could interpret this information as a positive consequence. However, its main point is to show the social issues such as digital divide which are really related to our society. I think this data helps to make the message clearer.

The reason why I chose this article as best is that it shares current datas about how people use their smartphone and one of social issue related to technology. I think that this article is great to learn about the topic.

This article talks about an interesting Facebook’s plan, a drone which provides wireless access by sending beams to people from the skies. The author describes what this technology is and a similar technology which has been done by NASA to Facebook' one.

Facebook calls this new drone “Aquila,” and according to the article, it will fly from 60,000 to 90,000 feet above the Earth and stay up to three months in the sly at a time. People may think that this technology is really cool because the technology seems like science fiction and a future of technology. However, it is possible to argue whether or not this aircraft is really safe to operate in the sky for a long period. Before Facebook officials begin operating this project, it is really necessary to test its safety and impacts on the environment as well because we haven’t seen this kind of technology yet.

I think this technology will be a great way to deliver wireless access to vast areas more efficiently. Also, this technology could be one of solutions for digital divide in terms of lower costs of Internet access to more people.

Moreover, this technology can reduce cost and time for installing Internet access system in infrastructure scale because it does not require many wires to connect place to place. It is all about “wireless,” so it will look and be simple to use.

This article made me wonder how the future of technology will look like. I recommend you to read this interesting article for the topic.

It is really interesting to read this article, talking about the social trend of laptops and tablets. Technology vendors generate and release new devices in the short term, and most companies try to sell more a new type of computer, laptop-tablet hybrids. The most dominant example of this device is Microsoft’s Surface series. This laptop has touch-screen and removable keyboard, so you can use it as laptop and tablet as you want. Also, the industry believes that this type of laptop will be the dominant laptop in the future. However, this article indicates that most people still prefer original style of laptop, like Apple’s MacBook series, and they like to bring their tablet to their workplaces and schools. I think that reading this article gives you some new knowledge about the social trend of advanced technology in the future.
