I am a student enrolled at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. My field of study is in Wine and Viticulture, with a Business concentration. I am currently taking a summer class through DeAnza, CIS2.

For my Midterm Topic in CIS2 through DeAnza college, I chose to do research on the MDG (Milleniumm Development Goal) number 2, acheiving universal primary education. There has been a great improvement in the past 5 years of the percentage of youth that are completing Primary education in the world. However, there is still a substantial amount of youth that are too poor, too uneducated, and dontt have the motivation to complete primary education, in developing countries arounf the world. Technology can help us reach this goal to get these children through primary learnign by spreading awareness through the internet, and donating our e-waste of outdated devices that we don't uses anymore. With enough donations and a fairly inexpensive internet setup in the developing countries that are in need, children could access the benfitss of Open Educational Resources that are so readily available to Americans.

1. Introductions

This article gives a good viewpoint on the internet's impacts on society. With both negative and positive sides to the discussion, it exposes how large the internet's impact is on our society. If you use the internet in a responsible way, it will provide beneficial knowledge and help to our society when needed. It is crucial to use this technology in a safe way.

**- https://www.ted.com/talks/gregory_stock_to_upgrade_is_human?language=en

This is a TED talk by Gregory Stock about the constant advancemnets in technology. In my interpretation of what I learned from the TED Talk, technology advancement is in "fast forward," but it is the ones who understand the benefits and danger, that will succeed. It also really took my attention when Stock mentioned how technology in the medical world is now focused on preventions of rare diseases and illnesses. He thinks that in the future this technology will reach advancements where humans would be able to pick certain personalities for their future children, etc. It seems imaginary, however, it is amazing, dangerous, and possible for our near future. This is a good opener to see what possibilities are being thought about for future technologies.

This article was most interesting to me because of its simplicity and the impression it left after I completed the reading. It was an informative piece that described 44 activities or actions that one could perform in order to improve many aspects such as the environment, office moral, personal health, etc. The list of actions is very simple, but when put into thought, is very beneficial if one started to make many of these activities into habits in their daily life. In short, the article encourages people to form healthy habits.

2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

In this article about using computers and social networks to find peoples' identities, I was shocked to hear that in 2009, "Alessandro Acquisti and Ralph Gross reported that they could accurately predict the full, nine-digit Social Security numbers for 8.5 percent of the people born in the United States between 1989 and 2003 — nearly five million individuals." This shocking statistic is somewhat disturbing because this personal information is so easily available to these two gentlemen. What else can be easily exposed of our "private" information through the internet?

**- http://lawdigitalcommons.bc.edu/bclr/vol47/iss3/2/

This article touches on the NSA (National Security Agency)'s use of warrantless surveillance on U.S. citizens. The Fourth Amendment protects citizens against unwarranted search and seizures. However, the NSA continuously receives information about U.S. citizens from surveillance of foreign matters. They can then share this warrantless surveillance with law enforcement, lawfully, to expose any criminal activity. This article exposes a scary reality of our government that some people may believe is a breach of our privacy and freedom rights.

I would recommend this article about creating a powerful password. There are many simple tips that are shared in this article to help the user to create a password that is strong enough to prevent most hacks. It also brought to my attention the importance of changing my passwords on each website I use one for. It is a good, simple article that can save you from multiple hacks in your internet experience.

3. Intellectual Property

This article gives a very interesting insight on how the external characteristics of artists are transforming as technology advances. For example, the author in the article mentions how musicians are now constantly having to upgrade their music software (a constant process of paying for upgrades) while in history, musicians would buy a single instrument, and then rarely spent money on maintenance (strings, refurbishing). Another example is graphic arts, where in history it was done on a medium with paint, or pencil. Now graphic arts in sometimes done with computer software, costing thousands of dollars and constantly needing upgrades. This kind of itellectuall property (e.g. software upgrades) has created an industry where people can pay to use an upgraded technology.

This article goes over 5 minor activities that are beneficial to one's success. One of the most important in my opinion, is the first one; "Plan your day." This step usually takes a little amount of time, but can help you save more time and accomplish so much more than going through your day and just finding things to do. 4 of these 5 suggestions work for me, and I try to use them everyday in order to help myself personally succeed. This article will help develop skills that are necessary to obtain your own intellectual property.

This selection gives information about the company SONY using DMCA regulations to take down public access to a short film that apparently isn't the content of SONY. This film was funded and created through a program by the company Blender. In regards to Creative Commons, the content of the film is all censored by CC, which technically means that the content was previewed and passed to be available to the public. How SONY can do this? I don't know, but it sure shows a flaw in the DMCA regulations.

4. Crime

This articel talks about a man that owns a copmany called PushTraffic. Essentially, Raygoza, the man behind PushTraffic, is an internet marketing schemer. He tricks naive users of the internet into thinking that their money could be increased with the help of a service that this man offers. This crime is very standard in our era revolving around technology. I get emails very often that appear to be scam opportunities. I sometimes wonder, "who would even beliebe that?" However, there are plenty of internet users that dontt know any better and believe what is "too good to be true."

http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/1/8876817/chicago-cloud-tax-online-streaming-sales-netflix-spotify

This article explains how a new "cloud" tax in Chicago that was implemented, is going to effect users of streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify. The nine percent increase tax has something to do with paying for access when you can share that access with others around the world. The article had a section about Netflix's plan to add the 9% tax increase to their monthly fee. This article is a response to the risk characteristic in Crime. The risk in crime that was discouraged with this cloud tax is that Netflix users were able to share their login with a number of people without being charged more.

This article is about a breach in the Army National Guard data server. Someone was able to obtain files of all of the Army National Guards from 2004 and on; in detail receiving their full names, social security numbers and more. The article reiterates that this incident was not a "hack" and it is predicted that there will be no unlawful use of this information. However, this is very dangerous that someone was able to obtain this information from what I thought was such a secure system. This article is a good example of computer crime that is likely to occur in our current society.

5. Employment, Education, and Entertainment

This video was very simple, yet can be very effective. It makes a good point of spending your money on things that will increase or even just hold its value. VALUE is an important factor in building long term wealth. For example, spending a lot of money on a car is a bad investment because the value depreciates right after you buy the car from the lot.

**- http://thenextweb.com/insider/2011/05/14/how-the-internet-is-revolutionizing-education/

This article talks about the Open Educational Resources (OERs) that are available online to the public. There are courses avialable from universities like Cal, Berkley and MIT. This form of education is a convenience to many potential students that would not have otherwise had access to this college level information. This publicly available coursework is possible through advancements in computer technology and the internet innovations like OERs.

6. Midterm - MDG

This article gives some insight to plans for internet access in developing countries. The article stresses the point that even though wireless access to the internet may be inexpensive to install, the only way for these projects to be "successfully deployed" if the demand for internet access "emerges in support of relevant applications for populations served." According to the article, it is difficult to implement things like e-education in developing countries. The solution to this problem is by spreading awareness about the importance of education. It can save lives and provide a better future.

**- http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2015/may/19/poverty-nicaragua-children-school-education-child-labour

This article has a unique viewpoint on problems with the education system in Nicaragua. A lot of the article deals with child labor, and the fact that children are no longer obligated to go to school after age 12. With the impoverished state of the country, many children said they were "bored" in school and would rather work to be able to provide support for their families. Awareness of the dangers of child labor and the law that only requires education until age 12, is one way technology can help improve the state of Nicaragua's primary educational system. The poverty issue seems to lead to all of the child labor and educational problems in the country, so that is where to start a solution.

http://www.worldbank.org/mdgs/education.html

This article gives a brief but informative history of the goal to achieve universal primary education. The fund for the IDA (International Development Association) donates on average $2.8 billion a year to finance poor and even middle-income countries. This is possible through spreading awareness across the internet. Advancements in technology like online education, have helped bring awareness to world goals like this one. The advancement of mobile learning plays a crucial step in reaching world goals like universal primary education.

7. Evaluating and Controlling Technology

http://www.facilitiesnet.com/facilitiesmanagement/article/Evaluating-New-Technology-Business-Analysis-Third-Party-Tests-Can-Prevent-Problems-Facilities-Management-Facilities-Management-Feature--13114#

This article helped me better understand the process of technology evaluation. The process of evaluation shared from the author is crucial for success. For example, the Business Analysis section goes over many properties that are good and bad backgrounds of new technologies. It also goes over the new technology's impact on natural resources, something I thought to be very insightful.

http://www.edutopia.org/blog/digital-divide-technology-internet-access-mary-beth-hertz

This article had some interesting points about the new discoveries of the "digital divide." One, for example, is that the issue in current day is no longer access to the internet, but what kind of access users are getting; phones, xbox, computers or laptops. The article points out that this really makes a difference because one is very limited with the things they can do with only their phone accessing the internet as compared to what a computer can do.

This video on youtube.com is a description about Creative Commons and the company's purpose. It explains that the website is a base where people looking for collaboration, without dealing with requests from the original copyright owner, can freely and easily go about their business with other people's available work. This can include songs, photographs, and much more. The website asks you to fill out some information for your work, and in turn refines your copyright to your guidelines for free. I have used some articles from creative commons in this class before, and I now have an even better understanding of the company's goals.

8. Risks, Failures, and Responsibilities

This article talks about a  system created under IBM that has helped improve medicine decisions. It is a developed intelligence "tool" that can improve the poor decision making in the medical industry. How drastically or minor will this system called "Watson" improve the decisions of it's users? With quick access to loads of important data, will the system be efficient enough to be used my medical professionals around the world?

http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/08/technology/united-nyse-wsj-down/

This article is an informative piece about a few technology fails, all experienced on the same day. The technology error caused United Airlines to stop all activity for a number of hours, caused the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to cease activity, and the Wall Street Journal's website was even shut down. Apparently these issues were all unrelated - the WSJ web page was said to be "overloaded" and had to shut down, while the NYSE "suspended their trading due to a 'technical' issue."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeana-lee-tahnk/neat-products-for-teachin_b_7138030.html

This article goes into discussion about whether teaching children to code is necessary or not. The many benefits that I read seem to outweigh the cons of teaching the youth to code. It absolutely gives the learner/student a leg up because they understand the foundation of our digital society after learning the basics. It also can implement important skills like, "decision-making, cause and effect, and providing a sense of empowerment for creating something from scratch." (huffingtonpost.com) If I ever find the extra time, I would like to learn at least the basics of coding.

9. Anytime, Anywhere

http://csi.gsb.stanford.edu/lessons-learned-walking-north-and-south-poles

In this podcast, Robert Swan speaks about his journeys to the north and south poles. He is the first man to complete both poles on foot. The reason he set on of these two remarkable journeys stems from his background as an environmentalist. The podcast emphasizes positivity in conversation and when planning out your life goals. He encourages that people share their stories of completing these life goals because hearing about journeys similar to his can have a huge impact and influence on advancements to improve our society and planet. He also put a lot of emphasis on pursuing your passion and making your goals in regard to what you are passionate about.

This article discusses the opinion that MOOCs have become a large failure in comparison to their initial intentions. It mentions statistics that are very low, as low as 2%, of students that are actually finishing the course material for classes. Another interesting point that they made is that most of the users that are taking these classes are from the more wealthy areas of their countries. "MOOCs seem to be reinforcing the advantages of the 'haves' rather than educating the 'have nots,'"- Ezekiel Emanuel.

http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/01/the-tricky-task-of-figuring-out-what-makes-a-mooc-successful/283274/

This article has a very interesting view on the significantly low rates of course completion. It specifically takes one Harvard MOOC where the first video of the course has 5 million views, and into the fourth video of the course there are only 200,000 views. They point out how significant it is that "Michael Sandel can post a 45 minute video lecture on moral reasoning and get 5 million views." (theatlantic.com)

10. Technology Advances, Social Trends

http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/transportation/alternative-transportation/lexus-builds-hoverboard-to-go-back-to-the-future-?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IeeeSpectrum+%28IEEE+Spectrum%29

This article talks about the current creation attempts at a hover-board, and the future plans for Lexus to develop a fully functional hover-board. Lexus uses "liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets" to achieve their latest hover-board technology. (spectrum.ieee.org) The article mentions how Lexus does't necessarily have the intention to make this a commercial product, but are mostly pursuing this advancement in technology for the "cool" factor.

The concept of making a fully functional hover-board is mind blowing. Lexus isn't the only company that has made an attempt at creating this idea in real life. There is another company called Hendo Hoverboard that has created a prototype that functions with hovering capabilities, but has not yet discovered a method of controlling direction. If these companies can advance the technology to get a product for commercialization, I wonder what sort of technology will develop out of this idea.

Bloom Box energy Server is a newer company that created a fuel cell technology to provide "clean, reliable,[and] affordable electricity at the customer site." This technology has allowed the generator size to be relatively small for the amount of energy it can produce for a facility. For example, a bloom box equipped with the slates of bloom technology, about the size of a large brick, can power an American household. The three main factors that are so important to the company are low cost materials, high electrical efficiency, and fuel flexibility. With access to this new technology, energy use is well on it's way to a new era.

http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/business_technology/the_internet_of_things_the_value_of_digitizing_the_physical_world

This article talks about the future possibilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the potential for an economic boom from its use. The data related to this technology was collected from real use scenarios where the technology of the IoT could be used in place of human operations such as, driving a car, monitoring maintenance needs and monitoring safety for workers. The potential economic output is represented in the article with a graph explaining each setting where the IoT may have value. As an example, factories could provide value to the IoT through "operations management and predictive maintenance."
