Hi, I am Andrea Kuo, 19 years old currently taking CIS2.

Summary of Grand Challenge

President Obama announced new cybersecurity legislative proposal and other cybersecurity efforts. There are always going to be hackers who engage in cyberspace both private sector and public sector. Even though business right now is making sure to prevent those assaults but at the same time the hackers are going to get better too. Obama has led efforts to prepare our economy to prevent from cyber threats. "Reputation-based technology helps people browse the Internet safely and engenders trust between consumers and businesses, as well as between businesses," says Bunker. Cyberspace will get more secure as software learns more about how we behave. Suppose an employee, who typically uses a company database to access individual customer records, suddenly looks at the top 1,000 customers: software could be written to highlight this anomaly. Dirro of McAfee thinks that what's needed to secure cyberspace for the long run is progress on many fronts, including technology, awareness, legal redress and human behaviour. There are a few engineering solutions for securing cyberspace. First, is through better programming languages that have security protection built into the ways programs are written. Second, is providing better security for data flowing over various routes on the Internet so that the information cannot be diverted, monitored, or altered. Lastly, engineers must recognize that a cybersecurity system’s success depends on understanding the safety of the whole system, not merely protecting its individual parts.

Individual Work

Introduction

I thought this resource from the online community service discussion back from introduction was a really helpful and interesting site to explore. Anike Foundation seeks a volunteer photo editor to organize our large collection of pictures and select appropriate ones for posting on our website, photo gallery and social media pages. The primary requirement is an eye for good photographs. These kind of online community service can be done by almost anyone, but it would be really useful for people interested in photography. I never knew there could be such an interesting online community service until I saw this website.

-http://web.archive.org/web/20050401033400/http://www.wbglinks.net/pages/history/ (best)

This is the second most helpful and interesting resource from discussion 1. This is the Internet history from the perspective of a computer geek. Everyone in the discussion was talking about different events that caught their attention, and for me, I think the April 1976- Apple introduces the Apple 1 was the most significant because back at that time, we wouldn’t have known how consuming Apple is for us nowadays. Most of the people have a smartphone, and half of the people that has a smartphone uses an Iphone! Not only did Apple invent iphones, but also macbooks, iwatches, and itv. Apple is one of the biggest companies in the silicon valley and they had a great impact on computers.

This resource is from the society selected media from discussion 1. It is a link to the 20 basic rules for digital citizenship. This study shows that people have taken their lives in response to overwhelming internet bullying. This graphic displays the tips and rules to live by when it comes to interacting with people on the Internet. There are a lot of different types of behaviours online and the law can’t always be there for every single one, so everyone should have acceptable behaviour for what to do and not to do on the internet.

Privacy

This article is from Learning Literacies-Protect it from discussion 2, privacy. It is very important for people to know how many hackers are out there on the internet. You would think everything you deleted will be deleted forever, but the truth is everything is online and nobody can really be sure if their information is safe or somewhere out there. We should all be extremely careful when it comes to personal information online.

This article was from the discussion of Privacy and personal information. I thought I learned a lot from this article because it talks about not having a safe environment online and whether or not your information is protected. It discussed the possibility of having a more secure online privacy because of the FCC and this really helps.

-http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304704504579432823496404570 (best)

This is an interesting article also from the discussion of privacy and personal information. People nowadays are realising that everything they do online is going to be tracked and that it can never go away even if they think they deleted something. People need to take more precautions and learn how to keep their own business to themselves. For example if some website asks for your credit card information, you need to learn how to protect yourself by not giving it away.

Intellectual Property

This was from the topic of Intellectual property, learning literacies-use it, and there are many different videos in this website that teaches us about media influence. Watching the videos, I’ve learned how much media is growing and how important of an impact it is to us now and in the future. Phones can be a huge distraction, which is a negative thing, but also a positive thing because we could use it to have access to huge amount of important information.

In this article, it talks about artists selling their work online. Most people wouldn’t think art and computer can go together, because art is an individual piece, usually seen in museums or gallery’s, but computers let some artists post their workings on the internet for more people that aren’t available to see in person, to see online.

-http://www.fastcodesign.com/3020194/how-a-company-gets-away-with-stealing-independent-designers-work (best)

This article is interesting and eye-catching once you click on the link because the title is “How a Company Gets Away with Stealing Independent Designers Work.” It shows that with the rise of computers, some artists put their work online for people that can’t see it in person, see it online. Unfortunately, some companies will steal those artists ideas without their permission. This is a pretty serious topic because it involves the rights of those artists.

Crime

This is from Computers and Crime in discussion 4, where we discussed all about the crime on the internet. In this website, the article talks about one of the biggest cyber crime in the history of the United States. Five hackers stole and sold credit card numbers and it costed the company a huge amount of money. Because of this hack, it put extreme amount of people at economic risk.

-http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/c/compcrim.htm (best)

Many of us don’t realise how strong and powerful crime can be on the internet. This article has a lot of examples of the computer crimes, and I think the most familiar kind of crime would be cyberbullying. Whenever I go on youtube or Facebook and read comments, there will always be people saying negative comments. They are not afraid to say it because it is online instead of in person. Cyberbullying has been going on for a long time.

The same website, but the topic is hacked, now what? So this source talks about processes one could do in order to find out if they got hacked or not. There are lists of things to do, such as resetting all the passwords, verifying account details and letting people know you got hacked so that they won’t misunderstand you.

Employment, Education and Entertainment

This website is from K-Engineering discussion 5, employment, education and entertainment. This source teaches us the importance of teaching children about science, technology, engineering, and math so that it creates children’s knowledge and learning opportunities. This was an interesting experiment from the teacher. There were fruit flies in the classroom but the kids came up with the idea of making traps for the flies.

This link is about an eighth grade robotics competition between middle schools. Learning robotics is also part of STEM, and it really helps with thinking outside of the box. The students started learning robotics in sixth grade and starts to design projects for the competition.

This website is extremely helpful for those in need of math help! This is a game in education, and it allows each student 20 minutes to learn more about math. Some games online really can benefit in education learning.

Midterm-Grand Challenges

This is from discussion 6, secure cyberspace. Cyberspace is essentially the network that allows the sharing and distribution of information through the use of the internet. Cyberspace provides property, money, identity, etc.

-http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/challenges/nuclear.aspx (best)

This is from the topic prevent nuclear terror. This article certainly had a lot of helpful ideas and concerns of nuclear weapons. Nuclear terrorism is not something that concerns every nation, but it has been a big problem for a long time. A single nuclear warhead could kill millions of people.

I really enjoyed reading this article because it states how important technology is for the achievements of research in the medical field. Nurses and doctors have improves many personalised medicine through technology. It is so convenient now that we have the internet so we can know the answer as soon as possible instead of having to wait for a letter.

Evaluating and Controlling Technology

This Ted Talk was by Linda Liukas, and it is from the computer and society video topic in discussion 7. This amazing talk was saying how the youth of today have the power to be the technology creators of tomorrow, but the need to be taught that tech isn’t boring or magic, but something that they learn and make themselves. I really enjoyed watching this inspirational video.

This Ted talk by Nick Bostrom, explains what happens when our computers get smarter than we are. I think this is definitely relatable to the course and is important to learn about. I find this pretty interesting that within this century researchers have been suggesting that computer AI could be as smart as a human being.

-http://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/articles/2010/11/guidelines-for-evaluating-new-technologies-for-infection-control.aspx (best)

This was definitely one of the best selected topic of evaluating and controlling technology. The website explains the process of implementing new technologies for infection control. There are guidelines that can be applied to computer virus control such as following cost per use, acceptance of patients and staff, impact on the environment, hidden cost, public relations benefit, and so on.

Risks, Failures and Responsibilities

-https://www.tynker.com (best)

I think tynker is an amazing site to learn how to code. Tynker lets you choose to be the educator, student, or parent once you get started. I think it is interesting for kids to learn how to code while they are still young, because a lot of people say learn as much as you can while you’re young because that is when the brain functions the best and can fully understand easily and is open to learning new information. Learning how to code can help incredibly much in the future.

This article is an interview of Dr. Robert Wachter, a medical professor at UCSF. The selected topic is medicine and computers, which is an interesting topic in general because medicine and computers have so much in common, but there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to medicine and computers. Wichita believes that medicine is better off with computers since there is better care for people.

The Machine will use and calculate genes, diseases, personal behaviors, and treatment history data sets from patients all over the world. The project will require that memory be installed in the center of the computer instead of a processor.

Anytime, Anywhere

In this Tedtalk Jeff Snell argues that the problem in the charitable sector is not that we don’t have enough charities, but rather that many of them are not sustainable, and we need to stop managing problems and start solving them. Social innovation is the key to reshaping our cities and societies.

-https://library.educause.edu/topics/teaching-and-learning/massive-open-online-course-mooc (best)

This site is a video talking about MOOCS and the connected age from the topic Massively Open Online Courses. The benefits of learning from MOOCS is that you can use it anytime and anywhere. The website FutureLearn is a really interesting and helpful website millions of people are using, and is all free.

This is a website of Bernie’s website and splashpage from the topic of politics and the web. This website gives us links and information on volunteering for the campaign if we want to know more about political process.

Technology Advances, Social Trends

This is from the topic of Tech Awards with major impact. I really liked this award, The Laureate Impact Award because it makes a low cost infant warmer used by more than 150,000 premature babies worldwide.

-http://www.edutopia.org/blog/computer-science-future-of-education-alison-derbenwick-miller (best)

This article proves how important computer science is to the future because these science skills are going to be a huge advantage in this competitive global economy. Schools now don’t see the importance of computer science yet and don’t have enough classes to teach this to every student, but they should.

There are give interesting facts about technology in our society from this website on the topic of Interesting Quantitative Facts. First, wealth boosted by technology has not been equally distributed. Second, doctors and scientists have used technology to tackle problems that once seemed insurmountable. Third, better technology doesn’t mean better education. Fourth, technology can help save the planet, and last, also help destroy if we’re not careful.
