OpenAviationMap's free tagging system allows the map to contain unlimited data about its elements, like run runways, navaids and aerodrome buildings. The community agrees on certain key and value combinations for tags that are informal standards, allowing us to improve the style of the map and do analysis that relies on the attributes of features. Shorter summaries of tags relevant to particular topics or interests can be found using the Feature pages.

The majority of features have a small number of tags, like a path with a single tag for classification, like aeroway=runway, and perhaps a name with using name=*.

For details of more tags and proposed changes to existing tags see Proposed features and Deprecated features. If you do not find a suitable tag in this list then feel free to make something suitable up as long as the tag values will be verifiable; over time you may find that the tag name is changed to fit will some wider consensus, however many good tags were used first and were documented later. Information about OAM tags is available as a machine-readable semantic network.
