The Human Rights Movement Activity One (Required Activity)

Watch the video:

The International Human Rights Movement: A History (Total is 1:28:15, however a section in the middle is mostly focused on US issues. Therefore we recommend watching until 36:45, then skipping to 55:00 and continuing there, for a total of 1:10:00).

Today's speaker is Aryeh Neier. Born in Nazi Germany, Neier fled with his family in 1939, when he was a toddler. Neier is an American human rights activist, and co-founder of Human Rights Watch. He is the author of The International Human Rights Movement: A History.

As you watch, reflect on the following questions:

  • What precursors to the human rights movement does Neier identify?
  • What does Neier suggest are some of the main accomplishments of the human rights movement?
  • In what circumstances does Neier believe intervention is justified to protect human rights?
  • How does Neier's position on the relative importance of economic and developmental rights differ from that of Navi Pillay (Module Five)?
