The History of Human Rights Activity Three (Required Activity)

In this activity you will have the opportunity to examine two of the foundational human rights documents that Professor Sir Nice discussed in his lecture. You may choose any two from the list below.

Examine each of your chosen documents. What are some of the rights it bestows? Who is entitled to these rights? Is there any mention of rights for women? What about people of particular races/religions? What about property rights or rights for justice?

Would you be happy living under these rights? Consider your two documents comparatively. Under which would you prefer to live?

Note that the text of some of these documents can be quite dense, and not all of each document is concerned with human rights. You may need to skim some less relevant sections, or skip over sections that are particularly difficult. As long as you get a sense of the rights discussed within your chosen document, that will be sufficient.

Cyrus Cylinder

Magna Carta

English Bill of Rights 1689

US Declaration of Independence

US Bill of Rights 1791

French Declaration of the Rights of Man 1789

This completes the required activities for Module One. You may now choose to proceed to Module Two, or to complete one or more of the Extension Activities. If you enjoyed this module, you may like to consider the 'Analyse This' task as one of your Active Online Participation activities. Remember, you need to complete four Active Online Participation activities as part of the course assessment, and they can be completed at any time as you work through the course modules.
