Assessment Component Two

The major essay is weighted at 40% of the final grade. Choose one of the options below. The essay should be 2000 words.

You are expected to research beyond the course materials provided for your essay, however including material from the course is encouraged as a great way to demonstrate what you have learned.

1. Are human rights declarations effective mechanisms for the promotion and/or protection of human rights? Why or why not? (You may use examples, case studies etc to justify your position.)

2. Are human rights treaties effective mechanisms for the promotion and/or protection of human rights? Why or why not? (You may use examples, case studies etc to justify your position.)

3. In the current era of international human rights law, how important is the state in the protection of human rights?

4. What progress in human rights has occurred in the past century?

5. Are human rights a western construction? Why/why not?

6. What are the human rights responsibilities of multinational corporations? What happens if they do not meet these responsibilities?

7. Select one (relatively) new technology relevant to human rights (eg. video, drones, social media, satellite imagery, etc.). How has this technology impacted human rights? You should consider both positive and negative aspects, and potential future impacts.

8. Select a country of interest upon which to focus. Examine the human rights environment in that country. Include background information, a discussion of how human rights have changed over time, how the country compares with other countries, and which human rights issues are most topical in the country today.
