Sustainable Development Goals Activity One (Required Activity)

In the preamble to the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN identifies poverty as the ‘greatest global challenge’:

'We recognise that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. We are resolved to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet.'

The Sustainable Development Goals follow on from the Millennium Development Goals, and contain 17 goals, with 169 targets, for the next 15 years. They represent the international community’s principle vehicle for addressing not only poverty, but a wide range of global issues.

These goals are particularly important, and will feature in the assessment for this course.
