Assessment Component Two

The major essay is weighted at 40% of the final grade. Choose one of the options below. The essay should be 2000 words.

1. Choose a global issue of interest to you. Students may choose any of the issues covered in this course, but are encouraged to consider a different issue from the four main issues we explored (ie. poverty, climate change, refugees or genocide prevention). If students do choose one of the four main issues, they are expected to clearly demonstrate that they have conducted research beyond the sources provided in this course.

Outline the source/s and scope of your selected issue for the reader. What progress has been made to address this issue and what is the current status of international cooperation on this issue? What are the main challenges associated with addressing this issue, and what are the future prospects of doing so?

If you are selecting a global issue that we have not covered at all in this course, remember to refer to the definition of 'global issue' (see module one) to ensure you have selected an appropriate issue. If you are unsure, please consult with your tutor.

2. Choose a target from the Sustainable Development Goals (see https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/topics). Make sure you select a specific target, not a goal. For example, a target is: 3.1: By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births

For your chosen target, outline the scope of the issue for the reader. What is the current status of this issue? Was it part of the Millennium Development Goals, and if so, what progress was made on this issue under the MDGs? What international cooperation exists regarding this target? What are the main challenges associated with achieving this target? Do you think this target is achievable by 2030? Justify your position.
