The Community Media Portal

The purpose of the Community Media space is to help practitioners share resources and ideas, so that you can develop timely and culturally-relevant content to achieve your objectives.

Community Media is any media, or combination of media, focused on and created by local communities. They include radio, TV and newspapers as well as new and online media and telecentres. Community media often exist in areas often under-served by other communication and information media and are therefore vital services. Community media broadcast in local languages. They are firmly rooted in local contexts, drawing on local community membership for ownership, management, staffing, volunteers, and as 'expert' resources on air. Community radios are engaged with their listeners and the wider community; they work in culturally appropriate ways. For these and other reasons, community media, especially radio, are unique and important vehicles for learning.
