What traits do we know in broad general terms about these groups?
Each group will have different anticipated needs and attitudes to learning. Some student cohorts may bring combinations and complex needs and requirements to the learning environment. These may include, but are not limited to:
School leavers:
- Young and inexperienced
- Used to school environment and structured learning
- Disengaged
- Age / maturity
Long term unemployed:
- Disengaged
- Unsettled
- Socio economic struggles and impact
- Access to resources and supports
Parents returning to work:
- Family distractions and stresses
- Time management impact
- Time since last study
Immigrants / refugees
- Language of training delivery as a second (or third, fourth) language
- Trauma from change of country – experiences associated with this
Trainees/apprentices
- Any of the above may apply
- Work demands and requirements
- Workplace learning opportunities
- Workplace expectations
Are any medical issues likely to impact on study and work
- Impaired vision – glasses, require better lighting, colour blind
- Impaired hearing – reduced background noise to support hearing and listening. Understanding of medical condition by trainer to position the learner to that they can speak clearly and face to face.
