ART APPRECIATION WORKSHOP (SESSION 1)

Zest, the Department of English, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, University of Delhi, organised the Zest Art Appreciation Workshop on the 3rd of September 2021 on Zoom. Dr Jayini Adhyapak coordinated the event. About 50 people, including all the faculty members, attended the session. The session began with the welcome address by Sneha R, the President of Zest. Dr Gunjan Gupta addressed the second-year students about the various forms of Artworks ranging from Prehistoric Art to Modern Art, followed by Contemporary Art. Several paintings, books and artworks such as “The Last Judgement” by Michelangelo, “The Coronation of Napoleon” by Jacques-Louis David, “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo Da Vinci, “Lascaux” which is a cave in France, “Louvre Museum” of Paris, “School of Athens” by Raphael, “The portrait of Lorenzo de Medici” by Girolamo Macchietti, “The Death of The Author” by Ronald Barthes, “Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient” by Edward W. Said, “Peau Noire Masques Blancs” by Frantz Fanon and many more were critically analysed and discussed by her. Further in the Workshop, Dr Gupta, along with the students, found answers for several questions such as “What is Art and its Purpose?”, “Is art Subjective?” and “What was the mood of the Painter when he painted?”. There was then a Question and Answer session after which Richa Sharma, the Secretary of Zest, proposed the vote of thanks.
