Cover Letter

  • No Yellow Highlighting - to indicate differences between final version and Assignment
  • Not following directions - to combine cover letter and resume into a single (1) document; and then also attach job posting as a PDF separately
  • Not attaching Job Posting
  • Putting Name & Address in the Header - Your Address info goes in the bottom of the cover letter\
  • Addressing the Cover Letter to YOU - not the person!
  • No title of the person OR Company name
  • Not using the template provided.

Resume

  • Not enough specificity / detail about the job and your experience
  • Grammar problems - verb tense - needs to be in the past tense - COMPLETED, CONDUCTED, SUPERVISED
  • Sentence Construction - often too wordy, rambling - needs to be CLEAR AND CONCISE
    • Don't hide behind words / bury your experience and talents
  • Not having attention to details (i.e., hyphens, capitalizing headings, periods after sentences)
  • Skills & Certifications - Indicate Level - expert, intermediate, beginner (1-10, where 10 is highest
  • Languages - English, Chinese (Mandarin) - expert, intermediate, beginner
  • References - Available upon request
