Read Section 3.5: Listening and reading for understanding, in Saylor Academy (Ed.) 2012. Business Communication for Success. (See page(s) 114 - 116 in PDF version.). This section of our course text explains how both active listening and reading support effective communication, and gives tips on how to apply active listening skills when discussing difficult subjects.

Now read Section 4.1 in Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking (pages 70 - 73 in the PDF version). This text describes the difference between listening and hearing, and various benefits of active listening.

Based on this reading and on your own experience, think about what barriers there can be to successful active listening or active reading. How might you overcome these?
