Prevention is the key to everything in healthcare today. Chronic wounds cost this country billions of dollars each year. It is vital that we teach our patient's to become part of the solution. Diabetic patients need to be taught to avoid ulcerations by keeping blood glucose under tight control, wearing shoes and protecting feet, only having professionals cut toenails, and exercising regularly to help circulation. As acute care nurses we need to re-inforce preventative measures. We need to tell all patients that smoking will interrupt wound healing as will poor nutrition. Education and prevention is not the job of "clinic" nurses it is the responsibility of all nurses
