Reading

Read the below primary source material. American President Woodrow Wilson presented his 'Fourteen Points' as part of a speech to US Congress in January 1918. Wilson's proposal sought to create a basis for negotiating peace and postwar reconciliation. He also proposed the establishment of a 'general association of nations' to promote lasting international peace and security. This led to the creation of the League of Nations.

As you read this excerpt from Wilson's speech, consider the following questions:

  • Do you think these fourteen points formed a realistic basis upon which to negotiate peace?
  • How do the fourteen points further American interests?
  • How do the fourteen points further British, French and German interests?
