Introduction to Automated and Manual Accessibility Testing

Introduction to Automated and Manual Accessibility Testing

We’re off to a great start! We know that we covered a lot of ground last week and your participation in the Scavenger Hunt and the ChromeVox Actvity, demonstrate that many are quickly becoming familiar with the fundamentals of Web Accessibility Auditing (some of you already do auditing).

This week we’ll get a little more hands-on, looking more closely at Web Accessibility Testing Tools and Manual Testing Strategies. You'll look at two of the many automated web accessibility checkers, AChecker and WAVE, and in the Activity Compare AChecker and WAVE you’ll have an opportunity to critique them. You'll also take a look at tools for colour contrast testing, readability testing, and HTML markup validation.

In this week's second unit you will be introduced to a variety of manual testing strategies. These include some quick tests you can do on a website to get a general sense of its accessibility. We'll also take a closer look at examining HTML code to pick out specific barriers and to test potential solutions to correct barriers.

By the time we wrap up this week’s content and activities, you and your toolbox should be equipped with most of the strategies and tools that you need to audit web content and identify potential barriers.
