Hi Jim,

I wonder if it would be possible to add some taxonomic levels?

I notice that if I leave the genus blank, that field simply disappears - a very useful feature - there are uses for things identified to the genus level or to just the family level (or any other level). So, would it be possible to have the following nested hierarchy:

Phylum/Class/Order/Suborder/Family/Genus/species

The idea being that folks could leave the identification at whatever level was appropriate for their skill level, available resources etc.

Cheers,

Declan

Yes, it is easy enough to add them. The template uses the #if parser function.

{{#if: test | not empty | empty or only whitespace}}
  1. How should the template behave when different parts of the hierarchy are left blank?
  2. Should the template add [[Category:]] tags for different components of the hierarchy?

1. If left blank then it should omit the field - this would be most flexible 2. I think adding a category that matches the entered taxon for each of Phylum, Class, and Order would be useful. So if "Trichoptera" is added as an order, we get a "Trichoptera" category. A general "taxon" category would help gather all of the groups tagged.
