My full name is Oonah Wendel Roberts. I was born on April 15, 1949 and that was Good Friday. I had my primary education at St. Ambrose Anglican School (now St. Ambrose Primary School) located at Third and Light Streets, Alberttown. My secondary education began at Central High School, Smyth Street,Georgetown in September, 1960 and was completed at The Bishops' High School, Carmichael Street, Georgetown,in 1967 when I wrote the GCE Advanced Level Examinations in Chemistry, Physics and Zoology.
My working life commenced at the Ministry of Education in October,1967 when I was appointed as a Temporary Class II Clerk in the Accounts Section. While working at the Ministry, I pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology (Major) and Chemistry (Minor) at the University of Guyana on a part-time basis. On graduation in 1972, I was appointed as a Graduate Mistress at my Alma Mater, the Bishops' High School. There I taught Biology at Grades 10 to 13, and Integrated Science at Grades 7 to 11. Bishops' was my training ground for teaching, a career which I continued for a rewarding 32 years, culminating as Principal of the country's leading secondary school, Queen's College. I further qualified with the Diploma in Education (UG, 1977) and a Master of Science Degree (FIU, 1998).
On retirement in 2004, I started a new career as a Counsellor, then later , a Counsellor/Tester with the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention Programme (GHARP), and was allocated to David Rose Health Centre, West Ruimveldt until August, 2006.
My return to education took place in January, 2008 when I was appointed on contract as a Senior Subject Specialist (Science). I am happy to continue contributing in science education, while working with teachers and preparing curricular materials.
My life was also blessed with a caring and progressive family. My mother placed a high value on family life and education, and hence the success of my sister and I. Aubrey Roberts and I were married in August, 1972, and this union was blessed with three lovely children. Today we have our daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and seven grandchildren.
I consider it a privilege to learn new skills in WikiEducator and to achieve the status of a Wikibuddy.
