Embedding Literacy and Numeracy into teaching resources

Teaching resources can be adapted to teach not only technical content but relevant literacy or numeracy skills which help learners grasp the new material. This is useful for learners who have a gap in their skills that may prevent them from understanding or completing assessments.

In New Zealand the Tertiary Education Commission has developed and published the adult learning progressions. There are 7 progressions which cover both literacy and numeracy and show how a learner progresses in their skills. They have been graded from step 1 to step 5 and have used a koru (the opening leaf of a fern) as a representation of new learning and potential - a Maori view of this icon.
