# Setting up a New Page

Creating a link to a page that does not yet exist is the first step to creating a new page. There are a number of different options to do this -

Description What to type Result
Type that name of the page next to the wikiEducator url http://www.wikieducator.org/nameofpagedesired External Link will show on page, when you click on it the page will have no content.
Set up a new page under your user name www.wikieducator.org/User:XXXX/nameofpagedesired External Link will show on page, when you click on it the page will have no content.
To create a link to an existing page in WikiEducator [[nameofpagedesired]] Name of page will show in blue and you are able to link to it.
Using the editing toolbar Highlight the word or set of words you would like to be the name of your new page and click on the Internal Link button in the GUI toolbar When you preview or save your content, you will see that the text you have now linked has changed colour. If this link points towards a page that does not yet exist in the wiki, the link will be red. If the page already exists the link will be blue.

## Internal Links: Pages within WikiEducator

Description What to type Result
To create a link to an existing page in WikiEducator [[nameofpagedesired]] Name of page will show in blue and you are able to link to it.
Using the editing toolbar Highlight the word or set of words you would like to be the name of your new page and click on the Internal Link button in the GUI toolbar When you preview or save your content, you will see that the text you have now linked has changed colour. If this link points towards a page that does not yet exist in the wiki, the link will be red. If the page already exists the link will be blue.
If you want the displayed text of the link to have a different title than the actual page name you can do so by adding the pipe | divider SHIFT + BACKSLASH
[[Name of the Target page|display text]]
eg, want to create a link that displays to the user as "Next Page" but the page itself will be called "ProjectPage2".

## External Links: Other web pages

Description What to type Result
Type that name of the url you want to link to (including Http:\) http://www.desired url/ External Link will show on page, when you click on it will link to the external page. This will display the raw web address.
Description appears as the title of the link [http://www.desired_url.org Text that you want displayed] Text that you want displayed will show on page in blue then when you click on the text, it will link to the external page
Enclosing the link in single square brackets without providing a description [http://www.desired_url.org] Will display the link as a number in brackets, like this: [1]. This format is mostly used for citing sources within an article. It looks like a footnote, so it's best to use it only as such (for example, following a direct quote or a statement which requires a source).
