Designing for effective open and distance learning
In this area I reflect upon the hallmarks of designing for effective distance learning as follows:
- To be aware of learning needs of target students ((The challenge of predetermining learning needs)
- Formulate terminal and enabling objectives (The challenge of formulating higher order learning outcomes)
- Align objectives to assessment tasks (Should every learning objective be assessed?)
- Provide opportunity for active learning (How to ensure that activities are not tokenistic?)
- Follow a problem-based approach (Perhaps necessary to prepare learners for knowledge-based society which values innovation, problem-solving and critical thinking)
- Provide opportunity for collaborative learning (We all learn better by sharing information. How do we strike a balance between personalised and collaborative work?)
- Promote assessment for learning (Rather than assessment of learning)
