Pollination is a process transfer of pollen grains from one plant to another plant. It is way of making of offsprings in plants. As in human reproduction is done similarly pollination is a process to create offsprings for the next generation. There are many ways to perform this process of pollination. When the process of pollination is done by butterflies, moths, birds etc..., they are known as vectors through which pollination process is done. The vectors which do the process of pollination are known as pollinators.
TYPES OF POLLINATIONS:
Pollination are of two types, Self pollination and Cross pollination. Self pollination, it takes place when the pollen from one flower pollinates the same flower of the same individual.
SELF POLLINATION:
Self pollination is aform of pollination which can occur when a flower has both the male and female gametes, that is the stamen and carpel or pistil. The mechanism of self pollination can be seen on, some legume plants like peanuts, soyabean etc.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SELF POLLINATION:
Advantages:
Plant that are self pollinating spend less energy in the production of pollinator attractants. there is less chance of faliure of pollination and hence help maintain the purity of race.
Disadvantages:
New species are not produced due to self pollination. Progeny show less vigor due to continuous self pollination. New character are not introduced. Character that are undesirable can not be eliminated. Self pollination does not help in evolution. CROSS POLLINATION: Cross pollination is also known as Allogamy. Cross pollination occurs when the pollen grains are transfered to a flower from a different plants. Cross pollinated plants have longer stamens than the carpels. They use mechanisms to ensure that the pollen grains are spread to other plants flower.
