Midterm - Grand Challenge : Ocean Discovery
Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE Finalists Conduct Final Field Tests in Puerto Rico for $1M NOAA Bonus Prize
Currently, as of February 12, 2019, XPRIZE have chosen finalists for their one million dollar bonus prize sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This has been an on going competition running for about three years now, challenging different teams from across the globe to rapidly advance ocean technologies. For this challenge the three teams have to identify and track, with the piece of technology they made to find a specific object by tracking the biological or chemical signal to the source. The three teams that are competing are the BangaloreRobotics, from Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Tampa Deep Sea X-plorers, from Tampa, FL, United States, as well as Ocean Quest, from San Jose, CA, United States. These teams will show how their piece of technology works in Puerto Rico and the winners will be announced by June 2019.
BangaloreRobotics
This team constructed in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, have been doing robotics and mechatronics for 18 years now. The goals they have set for their company have been to create autonomous robots to replace humans in the presence of danger, like the ocean for example. Exploring the ocean is very dangerous for humans when, on average a healthy person can only hold their breath for about two minutes. This team looks to fix this issue and have been for many years now. They have currently conceptualized a low cost underwater autonomous vehicle that can reach up to 4000 meters of depth into the ocean capable of mapping, oil spill detection, Hi-Resolution Cameras, and many other features advancing the technology that goes into our oceans.
Tampa Deep Sea X-plorers
This team that is from Tampa, FL, United States was created for this competition and to create autonomous underwater vehicles as well. This team is actually open for new people to join their group with expertise of mechanical engineering, computer programming, robotics, marketing, and business. They currently have 10 team members that are working on building the prize winning machine for this contest but most importantly trying to advance ocean technology so that in the future, exploring the oceans will become a thing of the past. Some of the products that they have already made are underwater autonomous vehicles capable of mapping the ocean bottom, and identification of friendly or hostile divers in a certain range.
All of these new technologies that are being created by many teams other than the few teams I have listed here have all contributed into the overall discovery of the ocean. This competition brings out the best in peoples ability to create and having a vast majority of team helping in the creation of new underwater technologies, can save humans from going into the unknown depths of the ocean.
Individual Project
1. Introductions
Selected Media - Society
The article I read was "10 Fascinating Things We Learned When We Asked The World ‘How Connected Are You?", by Jen Caltrider, and I was interested in this article because I like to look at percentages and surveys to see what others think on a certain topic. This article was about 10 things thought about the future of technology and how connected we are to everyone. Some of these questions asked if people were scared of technology, how many people owned a smartphone or a laptop, and others talking more about other aspects of technology. One that interested me was that privacy and security were not the top concerns for shopping online and it was just price and features for the people that took this survey.
Computers and Society Websites
This article "Musicians Have Now Used Artificial Intelligence to Master Millions of Songs", talks about how artists are using this AI to mix and master their songs to make their songs sound more clear and less like a train wreck. Usually a person would do this, Do you think Artificial Intelligence can take over the world replacing humans to do the work for us and do you think this would cause problems in the world? This had a great discussion going talking about how AI can take over the world, but humans ultimately have the intelligence to make sure that including them into our daily lives is possible.
Out of the two sources listed, the best one was the Computers and Society Websites topic because it had a great discussion going on canvas, a few people discussed how AI can take over the world if handled improperly. If we handle it with the intelligent minds that populate the Earth then we can possibly have a bright future on our hands.
2. Privacy and Freedom Of Speech
Privacy and Personal Information
Privacy is important to a lot of people on this planet and in this article by Jonathan Shaw called "The Erosion of Privacy in the Internet Era" talks about how the internet and technology is making privacy extinct. In the article it talks about some ways of how technology can leave you wondering if you are secure out in the world. For example how anyone can take a picture of you and basically stalk you from social media websites, with everyone posting on different social media platforms privacy is hard to come by. Even websites are able to gather your personal information and send it out to who knows, or hackers can pull all of your data as well.
Learning Literacies - Learn it
I found an article that talks about the Google two-factor authentication which has information on how to set it up in depth. I liked this one because if anyone wanted to know how to set it up they can and they should with amount people on the internet, hacking is bound to happen so having protection really helps. There was a discussion on how this site is helpful if you wanted to set this up and how this does help speaking from some else's experience that this method of protection has kept him safe for the past few years.
Out of the two sources I think that the Learning Literacies - Learn it was the best one because if you do not know how to set up the two-factor authentication, then the article does really help in doing so. The other article sets up that not everyone is safe on the internet and everyone should stay protected in someway, shape or form.
3. Intellectual Property
Internet Predictions Database
Topic was on Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humans. In this survey they asked a bunch of people if AI would be beneficial to the future of humans in 2030 and about 63% of them said that people would be better off while the rest of them said people would not be better of or chose not to respond. Many believe that AI will improve the quality of life but some consider the negative side effects it can hold as well. From reading some of the experts I believe that Human evolution is inevitable unless AI wipe out humans like in the movies, Humans are always able to adapt to certain situations, usually all relative to the times so in the future humans will continue to evolve even though it may seem humans will become more dependent on AI.
Learning Literacies - Use it
The topic that is presented in this article is about fake news. The evolution of social media and the ease of releasing info into world has become the norm in society. This info that is being released can all be faked and this article talks about a game that actually makes you create fake news yourself to then recognize yourself fake news if presented by one in your daily life. I thought this article was important because everyone gets bombarded with news everyday and we do not take the time analyze if the news is fake or not. This game allows yourself to train the mind to instantly detect fake news.
Out of the two sources I think the Learning Literacies - Use it was the best one because of how helpful it can be in someone's daily life in determining if news is fake or not. In the discussion people thought this game is a great idea that can help in knowing fake news because of the amount of information being given to us.
4. Crime
Risks Forum
In this article it talks about a piercing parlor in a Swedish city in Gothenburg working on a project that calls for chips going into a persons body. These chips would allow someone to have technology implanted into someones body, which is like one of the episodes of BlackMirror, a Netflix show, where they implant technology in their bodies while showing the story of how it can turn out horribly wrong. This is interesting because if put out into the public for different uses, like looking at different interfaces floating in your vision with the ability to control it can definitely make a huge impact to society.
Hacked Now What?
In this site it gives out detailed instructions on what to do if you were hacked through your email. This can ultimately help anyone who gets hacked off of their computer. One of the most important things to do even before getting hacked is always having a backup of your personal information on a different hard drive.
Out of the two sources I think that the Hacked Now What discussion was the best one because this can ultimately help people if they do get hacked and this shows what precautions you should take, like making sure that you have a backup drive for your information.
5. Employment, Education, and Entertainment
Open Textbooks
Open textbooks are a great alternative to some of the more expensive type of textbooks. Having access to them for free with a lot different information is really nice. One of the open textbooks I found that interests me is physics because I might take that class in the future.
Games in Education
The game I played was called Cancer Game. In this game the player is basically trying to heal the person or prevent the causes of cancer. The game is surrounded by the whole issue of cancer and how smoking can leave a damaging and lasting effect on yourself and others. One of levels takes the player into the lungs and you as a cell, has to figure out the problem and escape the room. The problem was cigarettes and I took that away and gave the body meds instead and was able to escape and save that part of the body which was the lungs.
Out of the two sources the best on was the Games in Education one because this one can help kids know what lung cancer is and how it negatively impacts your body. The games listed in this discussion were great because it shows how games can be a useful tool in learning life lessons instead of it just being entertainment.
6. Midterm - GrandChallenges
AI to Solve the World's Challenges
In this article called "How is AI used in Education" by Bernard Marr, explains how AI can really help the education system in a huge way. The positive impact it can have in learning is that teachers can have more time learning on new ways to teach while AI can take care of the planning of lessons. AI can also help in getting to teach individuals a little better instead of having the teacher teach all the students in class and it helps provide an opposing view with misconceptions that people may have on AI, like how they may be harmful to us.
Ocean Discovery
In this site National Geographic has used technology to go and dive into our oceans because most of it is unknown to us. They used remote-controlled machines instead of man manned vehicles because of the risk it presents to the people's lives going into the ocean. I was interested in this one because ocean is a very mysterious place and if we can explore through a safe manner, we can ultimately know more about our oceans.
Out of the two sources I believe that the AI one is the best because it shows a positive impact on they can help our education system because people are skeptical that AI can take over the world, to become their own species. This provides helpful information that the future can benefit from them instead of hindering society.
7. Evaluating and Controlling Technology
Internet of Things
This article talks about the Internet of things and this is about anything being connected to the internet like smartwatches, lightbulbs, and self driving cars. These are some of the different tech being mentioned in the article and there are even more detail they talk about IoT device's security. I would like to have one of those lightbulbs I can control through my phone, I think that is awesome and would save me some time walking to the light switch in any room, when it can be in the palm of your hand.
Thimble Remix
This is my first time creating a page like this and I think this is a nice way to learn how to create a webpage and this will come in handy if I ever wanted to create my own. I have used a coding application before but it was very generic like only a few letters and numbers on a page, nothing compared to this. I think the tutorial is a good and easy way to get into the basics of creating your own web page. My Thimble Remix.
Out of the two sources the best one has to be the thimble remix one because of the fact that people can learn how to do the basics of creating a web page, the tutorial is clean and simple to follow so many people can definitely create a page themselves.
8. Risks, Failures, and Responsibilities
Medicines and Computers
In this article it talks about how a study on how stress levels can be affected by just listening to music. This study showed two languages of music english and Urdu. The english music reduced more of the stress levels of the people listening to it. In my discussion I asked if music relieves you of stress one person said it definitely does and I thought the same because in certain situations I want relax and music is a great way to unwind from the stress.
Wikipedia and Trust
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning
On this page, it gives information on lightning and it has a lot explaining what lightning is. In the talk portion there is a discussion on the speed of lightning because it has a speed on the page but there is a different speed sourced on another article so the information is not accurate. In the history it is just contributors trying to revert vandalism or edit wrongful information that is being put on to it.
The best one out of the two is the Wikipedia one because even though people on this site try to vandalize information just to troll, there are people trying to put the right information out there so people can learn a little something about the certain topic they want to learn about.
9. Anytime, Anywhere
Massively Open Online Courses
https://oeru.org/oeru-partners/the-open-university/introduction-to-cyber-security/
I have had no prior experience with a MOOCs but I did go into the OERu website which had a wide variety of courses in them. I clicked on to the page where I can explore the different courses provided and I chose the one on the Introduction to Cyber Security. In it, it explains what is going to be taught in the class, how long it is and this course is free. It also provides how long the class is, so you know what to expect. I have never heard of these classes before and I think this is very nice to have access to be able to learn even more online in these classes for free.
Virtual Lectures
https://www.ted.com/talks/dina_zielinski_how_we_can_store_digital_data_in_dna
I decided to watch the How we can store digital data in DNA TedTalk. In this, Dina Zielinski explains how information can be stored into DNA. This type of storage allows for more space because DNA is so small there would be more space for information. I like how this speech talks about advantages and disadvantages of using this type of storage.
Out of the two sources I loved the Open Online courses one because of the fact that I can take an online class for free. This can be really helpful for low income students if they need to do certain classes and they do not have the money for the ones in college or it is a great way to learn on your free time.
10. Technology Advances, Social Trends
Future of Computers
https://www.wired.com/2017/08/robots-will-not-take-your-job/
This article that i chose is about the future in AI intelligence and the huge impact it can make to the society. This impact that these new AI programs that are being implemented in a lot of the workforce such as a bank stationed in a Japanese company called SoftBanks. The article goes and talks about that AI can make the automation of many jobs more of the norm in the future and that it will probably not take all of the jobs. The jobs being taken will not effect the the society negatively but instead help in bringing out more skilled workers.
There are two futures being addressed in this article about AI taking these jobs, will they just take over the industry and economic growth will soar, or will we ever exceed the amount of money being made right now even if they are put into effect. My take on this is that they will take over the industry and end up making the economy grow even more because as a society, I feel that we should never be stagnant and should always grow. I want to see the positive impact that it can make on society because automation is great because people would have more time figuring out other problems in the world.
Interesting Quantitive Facts
http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/03/20/10-facts-about-technology-use-emerging-world/
In this article it has 10 interesting facts about technology in our society right now. One of the facts listed on the list is that Filipinos love social networking and being one myself I can vouch for that because almost all my family uses social media whether it is Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, or Twitter. The Pew Research Center has a graph that states that about 93% of internet users in the Philippines use Twitter or Facebook, which is the highest on the graph, surprisingly.
Out of the two, the best source is the future of computers one because in this one I am learning of more ways that AI can provide us the ability to solve other problems in the world while AI can do the work. If AI were to ever develop feelings and conciousness then that is when we should work to communicate peace with each other.
