Effectiveness of Library in Formal and Open School Education - A Comparative Study-
Introduction The library performs a crucial role in the educational process. It expands and supplements the curricular learning. It widens the horizon of knowledge. It satisfies the quest for learning, sharpens the human mind and clarifies the concepts. In India, libraries assume greater importance, as most of the students cannot purchase the essential books for their studies. Teachers’ support along with library facilities help most of the students in clarifying their doubts and enhancing their knowledge. In formal school education, every institution has full-fledged library facilities in its premises. The students of formal education can access the library as per the general rule of their school administration. But in open school system most of the students generally do not derive maximum benefit from their school library. To ascertain the effectiveness of library in the studies of the learners of secondary education of both formal and open school the present study has been taken up. Objective of the Study Library serves the needs of the academic community. It provides all kinds of test books, reference materials to the students. It provides a study atmosphere to the learners. It provides the lending service to the poor and needy learners. Keeping in mind all these facilities of a school library the present study has been taken up with the following objectives. General Objectives: The general objective of the proposed study is: To undertake a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of library in the learning process of the students of formal education and open education system particularly in secondary level (class X) of studies. Specific Objectives: The specific objective of the proposed study are: -To find out the awareness among the students about the benefits of library in schools; -To find out the various facilities available to the students of both formal and open school students; -To find out the purpose for which students use the library; -To find out the increase in the level of knowledge of the students after availing library facilities; -To compare the library facilities, awareness, and benefits of library both in formal and open schooling system; and -To suggest suitable measures to improve the library services in school education. Scope of the Study The scope of the study is limited to the students of secondary education (class-X) of formal and open school system. The institutions where both formal and open education is imparted will be part of this study. The students will be randomly selected having representation from high performance to low performance, rich and poor students. The scope of the study is restricted with Delhi and NCR. Sample The sample size would be 100 students of class X level from formal and open schooling system. Atleast five schools of Delhi and NCR will be considered to for this study. Methodology The study will be based on the primary data to be collected through questionnaire and personal interview. Different questionnaires will be developed to collect the data. Personal interview of the students will also be arranged. The performance level of the students before and after providing the library facilities will be observed. If required the teachers’ feedback about the change in performance will also be recorded. Tools Questionnaires will be prepared for collection of data. The data will be analysed in excel sheets. Simple statistical tools like percentage, ratio, mean etc. will be used for analysis of data. Tables, charts, graphs etc. will be used to present the inputs and findings of the study. Limitations Studies will be conducted in those schools where both open and formal education is imparted to the students in the same campus. Since the size of the sample is restricted, so the limitations of small sample are applied to this study. Conclusion The proposed study will try to find out the effectiveness of library services in the school education system of both formal and open schooling. It will also suggest the measures to be taken by the school to provide better library facilities for their students. |
