DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Students carrying out research on the compound

The attached photograph shows senior five students of Gayaza High School studying Statistics: "collection of data on the circumference of trees". This was a student-centered lesson done during their free time on Saturday. So we cannot sacrifice students at the pretence that there is no time for student centered learning because of the demands of our syllabus.

STATISTICS-COLLECTION OF DATA

The focus of the lesson is:

Activity
Measuring the circumference of a sample of trees

CLASS: SENIOR FIVE-Age 17-18 years

Teachers should focus on the following objectives.

Icon objectives.jpg
Objectives
By the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
  1. Collect and record data.
  2. Tabulate data in a frequency table using appropriate classes.
  3. Calculate the average.
  4. Represent data using graphs such as; a pie charts, histogram.
  5. List the names of a few trees on the compound.
  6. Use a cam recorder.
  7. For the new students in senior five they should have learned some of the corners of the school compound.

Preknowledge

This lesson should be conducted in senior five to introduce statistics. The lesson

is meant to remind the students about the statistics work covered in senior four. It should be purely a group discovery approach.

Icon activity.jpg
Activity
By selecting 20 trees on the school compound measure their circumference taking readings at a height of the chest of the shortest member in your group.

Take three readings each time and record down the average reading.

  1. Tabulate your findings in a frequency table using suitable classes.
  2. Represent your findings on a pie chart and a Histogram.
  3. Calculate the mean circumference of your sample of trees.

Assignment

Each group should make a presentation (power point) of their findings in a class discussion.

Outcomes

This lesson creates awareness about the environment and many of such lessons would develop a student who is positive towards our environment.

LESSON TWO

PHYSICS LESSON IN THE FRUIT GARDEN

TOPIC: MEASUREMENT

The following are key points to take note of.

Icon preknowledge.gif

Preknowledge

To be taught after the introductory lesson of using the Micrometer screw gauge,Vernier callipers and a ruler for measurement in the physics laboratory at senior one.

Icon key points.gif
Key points
*This lesson is designed for at most 15 students (age 13-16).
  • The teacher should make available:5 Metre rulers, 5 Vernier callipers, 5 Micrometer screw gauges.
  • The students should be requested to carry their physics book with the class notes on the topic.
  • The teacher should divide the students into Five groups mixing the levels according to the abilities.

Portfolio Activity

The school should have an Environment Club that has developed a tree garden which can be used for educational purposes.

The teacher shows a student how to plant a tree seedling A student enjoys the tree planting activity

Objectives
By the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
  1. To read and use a micrometer screw gauge and a vernier callipers.
  2. Collect and record data.
  3. Calculate the average.

Activity
Select 20 different plants and measure their heights and diameter. Take three readings of the diameter at different points on the stem and record your values in a suitable table.

Group work in the field The teacher should offer the necessary help in the field Working together in the field work in the field Using a vernier callipers Using a micrometer screw gauge
