Objectives
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
  • Draw simple electric circuits using the correct symbols
  • Identify circuit components and relate them to their symbols.
  • Demonstrate how electric current and voltage change as components connected in series are changed

First activity

Activity
1. Identify the parts of a circuit
  • Connect a bulb, a battery of two cells, a switch and an ammeter.
  • The diagram below represents the circuit you are to set up.
  • Photograph the circuit and print the photo cut it up and paste four pictures of the four components labelled into the spaces around your diagram

Second activity

Activity
2. Investigate the current in a circuit
  • Using the ammeter record the current
  • Add a second bulb and record the current again
  • Repeat with a third bulb
  • Draw a diagram for the final circuit in your science book.

Activity
3. Investigate circuit diagrams and voltage using links PHET website
  • Record any new facts and ideas you learn whilst you are repeating activity 2 as a simulation using the link provide below

Activity
4. Investigate circuit diagrams and voltage using links to BBC websites
  • Record any new facts and ideas you learn whilst you are carrying out the activities in this link
  • if the previous link was really easy and you want to learn more try this one

Again write down any new facts and ideas you learn whilst you are carrying out the activities

Reflect and Learn More With Others

(This final section is designed for use with a school learning management system (LMS) It could be carried out as a classroom activity.)

  • Using the discussion module on the LMS for this task post the three most interesting facts or ideas you have learned
  • Look at other students posts and add any you have missed.
  • Encourage others by responding to their posts.

Robin, I am not sure what you would like to add to your template. Can you clarify your needs? --Nellie Deutsch 11:21, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

This is the code for activity 3:

{{Activity| 3. Investigate circuit diagrams and voltage using links PHET website * Record any new facts and ideas you learn whilst you are repeating activity 2 as a simulation using[http://phet.colorado.edu/simulations/sims.php?sim=Circuit_Construction_Kit_DC_Only this link]}}<br />

Why is it not coming up with an activity box with the instructions inside it?

I've found the problem -- the link contains a character which cannot be parsed by the template engine in WE -- I suspect that it may be the "?" in the url. The best solution is a workaround -- post the link outside of the activity template :-) Hope this helps. --Wayne Mackintosh 06:35, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
