A basic concern of education is to enable children to make sense of the world around and link knowledge thus acquired with their lives. The recommendations of various committees and other expert bodies have attempted to redress the issue of providing a framework for schools and teachers to plan learning experiences which ideally children should have. The NCF 2005 emphasizes the need to build faith in the child’s creative ability and provide learning environments for them to construct knowledge from daily experiences. The elementary level teachers and other functionaries need to be sensitized and oriented towards this approach of teaching and learning and its implementation in the classroom. Orientation and recurrent training of such a large workforce is a big challenge. A collaborative approach for professional development has the potential to meet this challenge.
