Rugby World Cup: Culture and Community

Objectives

Content Learning Objectives By the completion of the unit students will be able to: Outline which nations will attend this event, and describe three distinctive aspects of how the culture of at least one of the visiting countries is different from their own Explain how this event is viewed as important by this country in terms of culture and national identity Discuss what the government is doing to support the staging of this event in this country, and why the government considers these measures to be important. Process Learning Objectives By the completion of the unit students will be able to: Explain the inquiry process followed by the class to find answers to puzzling questions, and why each step was important Demonstrate at least two skills they found useful in working the inquiry process, and outline how they found these skills useful Participate in a discussion/debate on a topic/issue linked to the inquiry process, providing reasoning for their idea(s) Reflect on their learning from the unit and evaluate what they found most interesting, and how they might be able to utilize the skills they have acquired in this unit in future learning experiences

Introductory Activity: Changing the Calendar

Why are your school holiday dates being changed in 2011?

Objectives

By the completion of this activity you should be able to explain why the school holidays are being changed in New Zealand in 2011 and have begun to think about what your feelings are about this change.

Activity

If you look at the calendar, you should be able to see some changes between 2010’s school holidays and 2011’s. Where do the biggest changes happen? This is not something that happens normally. The last time school dates were changed this much in New Zealand was when we changed over from a three term school year to a four term school year, back in 1996! Talk with the people sitting near you why you think the dates might be being changed. Share your answers before reading the article below. So having read the article, in your table group summarize the reasons for the dates being changed. Can you think of any other possible reasons? Your teacher will make a list of all the reasons that the class comes up with for you to think about and come back to as you learn more about the Rugby World Cup. Given that you will be affected by the decision to move the holidays, do you think someone should have asked you what your opinion was? What would your response have been if you had been asked? Why?

What do we know about the Rugby World Cup?

Objectives

At the end of this activity you should be able to describe the history of the Rugby World Cup and some of the reasons why the event is important not only to rugby teams and fans but to the countries which get to host the competition.

Activity

Your teacher will divide the class into teams for this activity. You will have to work with the members of your team to answer a series of questions about the Rugby World Cup. You will be given an article to read which will help you answer the questions, but as a group you will need to do some thinking as well! It’s important that everyone in your team understands the answers you come up with, because at the end of the activity you will go head to head with the other teams in a competition for points, and everyone in your team will need to contribute if you are to win the tournament (and the prize that goes with it).
