Writers become better at their craft through actively reading fiction. In this exercise, we will begin to differentiate reading for pleasure and start reading as a writer. You will need to pay special attention to small details in the stories you select.

Reading Journal Exercise: This assignment will help you to:

Read three stories of your own selection from Missouri Review's TextBOX online digital library.

Compose a 250-300 word reflection over one of the stories where you consider how the author engages in empathy to expand the audience's understanding of the story's plot, characters, or setting.
