Licensing
Leigh, Sorry to bug you about this, but I wanted to suggest that you should be adding more than "CC" when you upload an image because there are lots of different CC licenses and not all might be compatible with WE, and the licenses require redistribution under the same license. Also, there should be a link back to the license conditions. You know all of this, so I suspect maybe we need better general knowledge and practices about using image license templates on WE - and development of some more user-friendly upload/licensing approaches/workflow. Currently, it seems to me that the best available template would be to substitute Template:Metadata, then fill it out with relevant details. Unfortunately, there is a LOT of work to be done by the WE community in fixing up the significant amount of unlicensed (and uncategorised) content, some of which I've started tagging using Template:unlicensed and [[Template:|uncat]]. There seems to be a surprising lack of awareness/knowledge/responsibility around these issues on WE - I would have thought that it was part of basic training, with mentors/trainers keeping an eye on their inductees. You do better than most by at least making sure your uploads are CC, but most uploads have no licensing attached at all. On Wikimedia projects, the uploader would be reminded almost immediately to add a license tag, and the image would be deleted if no license was added within a week. Let me know what you think. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 08:00, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hi James, I don't know what you're refering to. I always use "CC By" when I upload. Are you perhaps thinking that my "By" is not part of the license statement? All the uploads I do come from the Flickr CC By database, and I always include a link back the the image's page in Flickr... I agree with everything else you point to though... there is certainly a need to generate awareness, and everyone should be including references to where they get images from... It needs to be dead easy. My lazy system of just putting "CC By link to image's page" should be the bare minimum... If this doesn't mesh with what you're seeing in my uploads, please show me.. I'm worried someone might be editing with my login now... --Leighblackall 06:17, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I should have given some actual examples (forgotten which ones now), but it could be worth checking through http://www.wikieducator.org/index.php?limit=500&title=Special%3AContributions&contribs=user&target=Leighblackall&namespace=6 e.g., just picking a random one, I got Image:Blogger posting.jpg with no license. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 10:37, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
