Topics 1-10 and Links

  1. Introductions

http://www.wisenepali.com/2014/11/positive-and-negative-impact-of.html

This source is good because it explains how computers have influenced our culture, and it also has a pro and con list on how computers are beneficial and negative toward our society. It got me thinking about how much internet I use, and I had to evaluate my pros and cons.

http://www.butterats.org/computers-how-they-have-changed-our-lives/

This source is good because it explains what a computer is, the function, the types of computers there are and internal pieces, and what is trending with computers. It got me thinking about how little I actually know about computers and it got me to do some reading on it.

https://catalyst.deanza.edu/moodle/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=68319

I think this was a good thing to research. We were asked to find community service online sources and until then I didn’t even know you could do service online. Great way to learn more.

I think the best source would have to be the first one because it details the pros and cons of computers and internet on our society. It is insightful.

2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-tell-if-website-dangerous.htm

This source is great because it gives you a list of sites that can check if a different site is potentially harmful. It breaks down the steps on how to check if sites are bad and how to avoid them.

http://www.cracked.com/article_19683_6-terrifying-user-agreements-youve-probably-accepted.html

This source is insightful because it breaks down the agreements one clicks on to access movies, games, and online content. It makes you think twice about what you’re doing on the internet and how things aren’t really as private as they seem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suMza6Q8J08&feature=youtu.be

I think this source is the best because it is a video, and for a lot of people it is easier to understand. It breaks down what copyright is and explains how people just simply copy and paste, and how you can keep doing this, but do it legally. It is really good because it explains fair use, what you can copy and paste, how you can use copyrighted material.

3. Intellectual Property

http://briggstigers.edublogs.org/2016/01/21/amazing-free-and-public-domain-photo-sites/

This source is cool because it list a couple of sites where you can search and use photos free. It is a quick blog so it is not the best source.

http://www.schrockguide.net/uploads/3/9/2/2/392267/fairuse1.jpg

This source is great because it’s colorful, and it is simple. It’s a chart with questions to ask yourself when you’re looking and using someone else’s work. I think it’s good to follow the steps on this chart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZT-FZqfxZA&feature=youtu.be

I think this is the best source because it is a video and it is insightful. It talks about how people lose motivation and how to stay motivation. I think it was great to insert this in the second week because after doing week one, it’s a good pick me up to stay motivated in the class.

4. Crime

http://www.bitrebels.com/technology/how-to-hacker-proof-your-life/

This source is good because it is about something we are faced with everyday. It details how easily we can get hacked and what types of hacks can happen. It also includes a photo and chart with steps on how to make yourself hacker-proofed. I think it’s the best one because it has an informative chart.

http://www.stopbullying.gov/cyberbullying/index.html

I chose this source because I think we overlook how serious cyberbullying is. This source has other links attached that have stories about kids and families going through cyber bullying. I think it is good to actually take a look at the stories because cyberbullying is a serious crime.

http://newatlas.com/gear-amputee-gaming-footwear/44035/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=627350ed6a-UA-2235360-4&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_65b67362bd-627350ed6a-91443157

Interesting read about an amputee that can continue to play games with new technology using his feet. Refreshing read.

5. Employment, Education and Entertainment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odIUNbt3ev8&feature=youtu.be

Good video on something we probably overlook, sitting for long periods in a day, and slouching. After watching this you see how disastrous the effects are. This ties into work and education because a lot of people have simple office jobs and with our smartphones we spend time slouching over looking down at our phones.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/85broads/2014/02/06/how-to-hire-curious-people-and-keep-curiosity-alive/#5f51500294dd

Good read, with tips for hiring curious people. Being curious is a great quality that people who are hiring are looking for. It’s good to see and read so you can prep for a potential hire.

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/negative-effects-computers-workplace-22023.html

This source describes the negative effects of computers at the workplace. It is fairly common to have computers at the workplace. How it creates stress and health problem, and is a distraction. I think this is the best source because it is something we can take with us when we have jobs in the future.

6. Grand Challenges

https://thewaterproject.org/

This is a good source for a project that's occurring right now. You can donate to provide children with fresh water.

https://catalyst.deanza.edu/moodle/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=73786

I put in the link to my midterm project, while it might not be the best example, I think it is the best source because of the work that had to be done. It was cool to look up new technologies and research about it. It was a very good project.

http://www.solarenergyworld.com/2012/11/12/how-solar-energy-can-help-the-economy/

This is the best source because it relates back to our midterm project. It explores a new technology and describe what solar energy is, and the jobs available and why solar energy would be a good thing for you.

7. Evaluating and controlling technology

http://www.bottomlineperformance.com/technology-evaluation-checklist-for-learning-professionals-free-download/

This source provides a great checklist that weeds the good new technology from the otherwise garbage new technology. With four steps you can be on your way to accessing useful technology. This is the best source because we are in the heart of the silicon valley and we tend to just grab anything that is new and “ techy”

https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/models.asp

Interesting read about Hurricanes and the different types of models there are. Detail about the technology used to read them.

https://www.rsaconference.com/blogs/a-gift-of-fire-social-legal-and-ethical-issues-for-computing-technology

This source gives an analysis of a book about the implications with technology.

8. Risks Failures and Responsibility

http://www.futureforall.org/futureofmedicine/medical_technology.html

Here is a fun source that lists technology being worked on, that exists or are being talked about. This relates to the topic because it implies the risks and failures of the new inventions.

http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/01/02/371945110/researchers-create-artificial-organs-on-microchips

Another read about future health technologies. This doctor wishes to create something that helps with diseases that cause diarrhea. It’s about small artificial organs.

http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/at-work/innovation/what-does-responsible-innovation-mean?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IeeeSpectrum+%28IEEE+Spectrum%29

This is the best source because it raises the question: is this ethical towards our future? I think this is the best source because it’s a good idea to get engineers to think about the implications of their technology and allows them to act on a humanitarian level.

9. Anytime,Anywhere

http://m.gutenberg.org/

Good website with good oppurtunity to get free books!

https://www.fractuslearning.com/2016/07/19/digital-reading-devices-boys/

Interesting article about how boys should start reading more, and to make this more convenient they placed books on the screen. The argument is that boys spend too much time looking at the little screen and not enough time actually reading. It describes the benefits of E-books and this ties into the topic because it is making reading accessible.

http://teacherrebootcamp.com/2016/06/22/mobilelearningmovement/

I think this is the best source because it talks about getting kids eager to learn through mobile devices and has lesson plans and ideas that other teachers can follow. With the world now and that we have everyone on a smartphone or device it seems practical.

10. Technology Advances, social trends

http://www.imeche.org/news/news-article/human-augmentation-the-next-phase-in-robotics?utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=&utm_campaign=

Interesting read about the future of robots and humans, and how we can solve current problems. It is scary for me to think about the advancement of artificial intelligence.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/google-deepmind-energy_us_578f9137e4b0f180da63cc6b

Cool read about how Google used artificial intelligence to help cut its energy bill

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwWhvm5RHZE

I think this is the best because it is a video. It is alarming but overall bringing awareness to situations that need to be talked about. Overall I think this is best because even with all these advances we are still killing our Earth, our home.
