►UTILIZING RELIGIOUS SCRIPTURES FOR FOSTERING VALUE EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS- A STUDY
- I described findings question wise. One of the findings of this research was:
- Q. How should there be provision of universal teachings of religious scriptures in school curriculum through scholastic activities?
- Findings: Summary of the suggestions given by teachers:
- Teaching of environment protection, gender equality, child care, humanitarian use of scientific development, disarmament and globalisation etc. should be done using sayings from religious Scriptures for more positive reinforcement.
- Lessons introducing social and ethical concepts should be linked to the religious teachings, so that children accept it as a message of God.
3. The relevant quotations and teachings of religions should be included in school curriculum.
4. All the religions should be given equal weightage.
5. Only inspiring quotes and teachings related to moral values should be included.
6. By having value education classes and conducting discussions based on religious texts.
7. A separate subject can be prepared.
8. Every day one period must be dedicated to the religious and moral values.
9. It is tough to make any religious Scripture a part of syllabus in a secular country but yes in some inclusive way, various Scriptures of different religions can be included.

"I strongly favour the use of Religious Scriptures to make Our students aware of the values given by great thinkers. If they can get aquainted with thoughts and philosophy of other great people of India, why can't they learn the views of our religious leaders"'
► MOVING TOWARDS INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: RESTRUCTURING TEACHER EDUCATION
Considerable Challenges/ Barriers
In the general teacher education diplomas and degrees available nationwide, there is an optional ‘special needs’ paper to train and ‘prepare’ teachers to identify and diagnose disability. However, it is not an integral part of the training, and it does not train teachers to deal with diversity or challenge negative attitudes
-- learning about the equipment and software theoretically and not learning how to use materials actually for students with disabilities
-- The duration of teaching practice (TP) is very short and also rarely any provision to practice teaching the special children. Students do not have opportunity to practice skills such as Sign Language, various instructional designs, and development of materials for special children.
-- No formal training and a lack of communication with support agencies
►PROMOTING VALUE EDUCATION THROUGH RELIGIOUS SCRIPTURES-PROSPECTS IN TEACHER EDUCATION
The holy scriptures of Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Christianity uphold many universal human values. The need of the hour is to explore these values and incorporate these in education. Education can be expected to make a strong contribution to moral development through the study of religious scriptures because of the depth of enquiry accomplished, variety of contexts used and different forms of arguments given in such sources of moral authority and these can have great influences on societies.
