DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF PHYSICAL RESOURCES
UNIT 1: PHYSICAL RESOURCES: RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE
LESSON 1
From the title of the unit you will have observed that we will be taking a closer look at Physical Resources. The word resource may be a bit familiar to you. You may have used it, or heard it used in conversation, or you may have seen it in reading.
From your experience write what you think is an appropriate definition of the word resource.
You can compare what you have written with the definition given on page 130 of your CSEC study guide.
For the purposes of this unit when the word resource is used it will refer to anything that is of value or that is useful to man. We will focus particularly on renewable and non-renewable resources. As we go through this lesson you will be required to do specific activities which will not only help in your understanding of this topic but which you will find quite enjoyable.
Take some time now to make a list of at least five things which you may consider to be essential to you on a daily basis. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Physical Resources can be placed into one of two main groups; Group 1: Renewable Group 2: Non-renewable
Lesson Objectives
Upon completion of this lesson you will be able to:
1. Understand the term physical resource. 2. Distinguish between renewable and non renewable resources by placing each item from a given list in its correct column. 3. Name the major physical resources of the various Caricom countries
1. Understanding the term Physical Resource
As stated earlier a resource is anything that may be valuable or useful in satisfying the needs and wants of people.
What are Physical Resources?
They are the earth’s natural resources or what you may call the gifts of nature.

list in its correct column.
From the list of resources given we can further breakdown Physical Resources into renewable and non renewable resources.
A renewable resource is one which can be replenished or re-supplied. In other words you can use it and it will be replaced.
Can you identify the renewable resources from the list above?
A non-renewable resource cannot be resupplied. In other words once you have used it, it will not be replaced.
Can you identify the non-renewable resources form the list above?
Activity: Take some time now to complete the following table:
