Introduction
My topic is "A Successful Relationship" and the research question is "What is a successful relationship?"
Rationale
I chose this topic because I have always been interested in all kinds of relationships. It is really interesting how people define a perfect relationship. Every person says and knows differently about a normal and healthy relationship. I'm in a relationship myself and I have my own opinion about it. Now I can really know and learn about relationships by this project.
Process and Steps
The steps I took in working on the project was interviewing some of my friends including my boyfriend and my family. It was very interesting to see how different people are and how different kinds of relationships they have.
Researching Relationships
According to Wikipedia,an intimate relationship is a particularly close interpersonal relationship. It is a relationship in which the participants know or trust one another very well or are confidants of one another, or a relationship in which there is physical or emotional intimacy. Intimate relationships consist of the people that we are attracted to, whom we like and love, romantic and sexual relationships, and those who we marry and provide emotional and personal support. Intimate relationships provide people with a social network of people that provide strong emotional attachments and fulfill our needs to belong and the need to be cared for by someone. There are relationships that are close like a married or couple relationship. It is a relationship in which the people know or trust one another very well or share many things with one another, or a relationship in which there is physical or emotional closeness and love. Intimate relationships consist of the people that we are attracted to, whom we like and love, romantic and sexual relationships, and those that we marry and give of ourselves and our emotions and help when it is needed.
Love is an important factor in physical and emotional intimate relationships. Though the term is notoriously difficult to define, any thoughtful inquiry into the subject will show it to be qualitatively, not only quantitatively, different than liking, and the difference is not merely in the presence or absence of sexual attraction. According to one analysis, love in relationships is divided into two types: passionate and companionship. Passionate love is intense longing, and is often accompanied by physiological arousal (shortness of breath, rapid heart rate). Compassionate love is affection and a feeling of intimacy and is not necessarily accompanied by physiological arousal.
People who are in an intimate relationship with one another are often called a couple, especially if the members of that couple have ascribed some degree of permanency to their relationship. Such couples often provide the emotional security that is necessary for them to accomplish other tasks, particularly forms of labor or work.
I took this project as a personal journey. So, I did a little research and found out that everybody dreams about a relationship and not only a happy one. First, people all want to have a relationship. I know that to love and be loved are two very different things because it is hard to find someone who can love you back the way you love them. I talked to my mother and she told that when she was young, it was very hard to be with the one you love. In her family, only the parents decided who can you marry or not. My mother's parents never forced her to marry someone, but also they didn't let her do what she wanted. They didn't want her to marry someone who would make her unhappy. My mother was born and lived her young age in a Jewish village where everybody knew everybody and the honor of the family was the most important thing of all. My mother and father met each other by matchmaking, which is how everybody got married then. She really liked him and that's why she had no problem marrying him. My mother never regretted it, because he made her happy. They argued almost every day and all we did was laugh, because the minute after they just forgot the reason they were arguing about and just kept it normal like there was never an argument. After that I talked to my father and he said different stuff about marrying my mom. He said that the minute he saw her he knew that he wanted her to be his wife. When my Dad said that I found it very very touching and almost cried out loud. I never knew that about them and I was very happy to learn that. The most exciting part of the project was interviewing my dear boyfriend. I wanted to hear his opinion about a perfect relationship. At first he said of course that the perfect relationship is ours and laughed. He said that I'm the only one who made him happy ever and for him we have the most perfect relationship. After that he said some real stuff that I really liked hearing from him. He said that there is no perfect relationship as there are no perfect people. Nobody is perfect he says and that's why the relationships cannot be perfect, either. He said that love is the thing that moves the relationship on and on; the relationship brings passion and passion stays forever because the love brought it. When a passion comes first it fades away and there is no more room for love; that's why a lot of couples break up when they think that the passion is their love and nothing is more important than passion.
I know that to be a good partner in a relationship is to be a best friend and be the first and maybe the only one that you can share your problems with, also to be there in happiness and sorrows. This was the part when everybody said that, my mother, father, my boyfriend and me.
Conclusion
It is interesting that everybody thinks the same about relationships, yet the relationships they are in are very different and not all that good. Not everybody is happy with their relationships, but they still in it, because they have a lot of reasons to stay and i can really understand them, because it is hard to leave something you have been in for so long. All i can say is that people need each other very much and it is very important to have a relationship. Every relationship with love and care is the real relationship.
Summary of My Work On the Topic
From my research project, I learned a lot of new interesting stuff about relationships and I think that everybody needs to find out more about relationships so they can learn and use it in their lives. I know that I will!
