Welcome to my Sandbox

I just finished reviewing the Session 2 syllabus - see brief outline

Summary of Ward Cunningham Interview video

  • Ward was interested in how ideas move around communities; wikis were a way to enable seeds of thoughts to grow and evolve
  • Initial ‘gift’ economy concept of anonymous editing to erase negatives (e.g. spelling edits) and highlight positives (e.g. idea dev)
  • Wikis enable collaborative knowledge-building; which is good when you want more minds to solve problems and/or to share ideas
  • Ward sees wiki collaboration as playing to each other’s strengths; which is especially useful when project outcomes are open-ended
  • He says we can learn enough about each other in wiki work to develop trust relationships beyond familiar 'in-groups' to
    • build intercultural communication across many languages
    • recognize contributions across diverse cultural contexts, including 'other' as well as dominant culture views, and so
    • contribute to world peace through a process of open, respectful dialogue
  • Initially didn’t build in open licensing; but later Jimmy Wales built it into Wikipedia

Images for your enjoyment to show use of VisualEditor and wikitext media tools: Besides the fact that I like coyotes, these images make me think about the value of both independent exploration and cooperative work in learning.
