Water Lily Lesson

Tube Projection Activity

Materials

  • Beakers
  • Different width tubes(clear)
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Projector

Procedure

  1. Begin by filing the beakers with water
  2. Add food coloring to the water in the beakers
  3. Place different width tubes in the colored water
  4. Set up projector so that the beaker is projected onto a screen
  5. Shows different water levels in each different tube

Science Connection

Surface tension, which relates to water lily lesson because it exemplifies why the paper lily floats on the water.

Water Lily Activity

Found on pg. 134 of Science Experiments, H.J. Press

Materials

  • Paper Template
  • Crayons/Colored Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Shallow Container
  • Water

Procedure

  1. Pass out a water lily template to each student
  2. Have each student decorate their lily and then cut them out(Figure 1)
  3. Each "petal" then must be folded into the middle so that the tips of each petal are touching (figure 2)
  4. Then place each lily on the surface of the water
  5. Observe the petals of the lilies open slowly (Figure 3)
