Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
The main concern I have about resources from an open authoring approach is in the reliability of the information provided. With the nature of open authoring I am sure all work put up is done so with good intention. Yet the way individuals filter and interpret information may lead to inacurate information that is not accepted by the overall community being posted, this is then accessed and used by students who in my recent experience are looking for quick solutions. But then who is the overall community that accepts the information? In my case it would be the scientific community for Biology and in regards to Studies of Religions it would be a very diverse range of communities and cultures each of which may take slightly different approaches to the teachings of their traditions. The other factor I have to consider is the driving factor behind the students study. In New South Wales (Australia) we have the higher school certificate where the results of a student's exams determine University opportunities, so the students are tending towards a content driven form of study and search for information to fill the gaps so to speak. (Unfortunately) So any content from an open learning source would need to be very reliable. I would like to see some form of content management / review occurring with sources that are produced.
In your opinion, should the creation of teaching materials and course development use closed or open authoring approaches? Give reasons for your view?
It should be open unless we have the desire to continue creating divides within societies.
What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in Wiki environments?
This is a quandary! Responsibility taken by particular educators for maintenance of a section? Embedding review of Wiki's into Educator courses at Universities? --Boomdiyada 22:28, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Another thought - How do I accomodate the students who I direct to access open source materials yet do not have access to the technology outside of school hours?
