Libre[edit]

Libre is a loan word in English borrowed from various Romance languages, including Spanish and French. As in these languages, "libre" in English denotes "the state of being free", as in "having freedom" or "liberty". Use of the word in English has blossomed in recent years on account of its value in distinguishing the two meanings of the word free (free speech and free of charge). See for example libre software, libre culture and libre knowledge below, where "libre" takes on a very specific meaning matching the "free" of "free software": the freedom to use, adapt and share.
